Radio Caroline - memories?

The community radio station I run is linking up with Radio Caroline and will be broadcasting from the Ross Revenge early in the New Year for a weekend.
For the show that I'll be doing, I'm keen to include memories of those that used to listen in its heyday, particularly if any band or singer came to you attention as a result of you listening.

From back in the late '70s/early '80s, when listeners could send in their own personal Top 20 (30? 40?) and RC would select one each week and play them all in order. The thing that most sticks with me is that no matter how metal/rock/etc the person was, "The Year of the Cat" by Al Stewart would almost always turn up. It was the first time I heard the song. Every time I hear it now, I can remember the warm and very un-hifi tone of our old Medium Wave radio reception.
I also remember going to various Radio Caroline road shows in Essex, headbanging all night, and then my Mum having to brush out the knots in my hair when I got home.
