learning electric guitar and what to buy?

Evening all,
I've said for years that I would try to learn to play the guitar. I'm 40 this year so now seems as good a time as any to give it a go........
I played violin at school but that was 25 years ago and I have forgotten most of what I learned about reading music.
I like classic rock, blues, modern rock, and rhythm and blues. Basically everything from Chuck Berry through the Rolling Stones, the Who, Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton, Creedence, Hendrix, Queen, The Black Crowes, Led Zep, Oasis, Greenday, Mark Knopfler / Dire Straits, etc
What basic electric guitar and amp would you recommend for a complete beginner with a budget of say £150-£175?
Also are there are decent books that would help me learn the basics?

If you can (could) play violin, you can play guitar even more easily; I came from the same background.
There are some really good budget guitars around these days - Squier (but the older the better), Yamaha Pacifica, Ibanez; take your pick, lots around for £60 upwards on Gumtree and Ebay. If you're in the Midlands, I'll cheerfully help with choice.
It may be a good idea to try the 'feel' of several different types of neck to see what you feel comfortable with - a Gibson- type neck is different to a Strat neck is different to a Telecaster neck and the size of your hands and fingers will be more suited to one or another.
Small, basic 10w amps tend to be much of a muchness, but the stand-out ones seem to be Orange (esp. The Micro-cube), Marshall, Peavey & the astonishing Yamaha THR-5 & 10 (but I'm biased 'cos Santa brought me one for Chrimbo, but it's probably outside your budget).
I love your choice of music, BTW, it reads like the set list from my final gig.
