Why do so few CDs.....

..have the data that can be read by many/most decent CD players so they can display artist/song title etc.

All my CD players now have this capability, yet I would say that fewer than 10% of my CDs carry the data. I see no obvious evidence that it is a difficult or expensive option, I also don't think it can be a space issue, as I have CDs with 20+ tracks that have it, and CDs with fewer than 7 or 8 that don't.

Probably because no one (relatively) buys cd's anymore so why bother.

You could always copy the ones you have and add cd-text yourself along the way...

Ok, point taken, I am behind the times.

However, many of the CDs, with or without, are from a few years back when CDs were the main option, so the question stands.

Sorry - I didn't mean it in that way - I lament the continuing demise of CDs greatly.

I think you've answered your own question though. Not many folks had players that supported it back when it was the only game in town leading to it not appearing on many discs.

Now those players are commonplace, if metadata is important to you then digital files / players (inc minidisc) have given a much much better alternative for a long time now. So cdtext (in my opinion) just sort of missed that window of opportunity.
