Post-Fish Marillion

Decided I'd listen to Brave, after not listening to Marillion for a while. not everybody's cup o' char While I'm sure they're not everybody's cup o' char, I keep forgetting what a bloody fantastic group of musicians they are. Don't get me wrong, I love Fish-era Marillion as well, b ut just thought I'd say...

I saw Marilion live last year and they were fantastic. I was coming from a position of not really knowing any of the post Fish material, but I was blown away by the musicianship as well as the great songs. Probably one of the best and the most popular "under the radar" bands operating today.

I thought some of the first post-Fish album was great, particularly 'Seasons End', but then I had to get rid of an 'Our Price' token in an emergency and bought 'This Strange Engine', which I thought was terrible and haven't listened to since. Recently heard a track ('The Damage') that makes me want to listen to some more, though it doesn't really sound anything like the Marillion I know.

I just can't connect with H era marillion.

I keep trying, but it just doesn't seem visceral enough for me.

I can't decide between Script and clutching at straws (on the strength of maybe 1/2 the album which is stunning).

Don't get me wrong, I really love Fish-era Marillion as well, but i've just got a bit out of the loop with some of the latest releases.

I might have mentioned this (or not), but I saw marillion - a secret warm up gig on H's first tour, in a small club in Coventry. Me & my mate were right up at the stage and it was one of the best gigs of my life. We were crammed that tight at the front, the bloke next to me took my glasses of me and put them behind Pete Trewavas' monitor. He said that if they fell off. I'd never see them again - I couldn't have raised my arms to save them if they'd fallen off!!

Script just - but only just - edges Clutching At Straws as the best Marillion album.

Honourable mention for Real to Reel as well.

I can't pick a favourite Fish era Marillion album either. Wavers between Script and Straws. However, lately I've been listening to Childhood a lot (skipping over Kayleigh and Lavender) and that is a belting album too.

H era albums I love a lot, but I do consider them a different band from the Fish era. I love Marbles, Seasons End and Afraid of Sunlight. Sounds is up there too. I detest marillion.com and apart from a couple of tracks (Waiting to Happen, The Party) I find Holidays a bit meh...

Still an awesome band with either Fish or H and I'm quietly glad they never got the trendy label.

The latest album, 'A Feast of Consequences' has a similar style to Raingods and there is a huge amount of emotion and personal reflection that Fish has put into the story. Definitely worth a purchase!

Fish's retirement plans are now sketched out - touring the “Return to Childhood” shows in 2015 and then recording his new (and final) album “Weltschmerz” next year with a final farewell tour in 2017.

Go and see the Big Man before it's too late!

I'm a big fan, and really think the post-Fish Marillion is such a different sound that it's essentially a different band. Brave is a fantastic album; that and Afraid of Sunlight are probably my favourites, but even the odd duff album still has a few stand-out tracks. The latest, Sounds That Can't Be Made, is pretty good.

I agree that they are fantastic live. The standard of singing and playing is studio-quality all the time. A talented bunch.

I've not really followed Fish much since, but found some of his stuff a bit self-indulgent.

Another huge 80's fan here, Fugazi is my favourite.

Loved everything post Fish to This Strange Engine which has a couple of worthy tracks but filled with mediocre stuff IMO. Bought everything since but have not listened much to anything although I love the track Power on STCBM.

I don't get the love for Marbles at all, it's competent prog rock but has no emotion for me.
