Steve Strange of 80's group Visage has died.

Apparently he has died in hospital in Egypt. Very sad news indeed.

Absolutely gutted, one of my musical heroes as a teenager and I was lucky to have met him a few years ago.

I had hoped that one day I'd get to go to a Blitz retro night, and see some of the people I missed out on in the early 80s because I was too young at the time. I'm sure he was a total self centred pillock, but the 1980s without Steve Strange's influence is unthinkable. I guess that burning the candle at both ends back then has finally caught up with him.

Heart attack apparently, but years of drug abuse won`t have helped.
It was a great time the early eighties New Romantic era, the music still dominates my collection. Japan, Ultravox, Visage, early Spandau (Journeys to glory/glow)
Tried to be as Romantic as possible whilst still in the armed forces
No wonder the Argies fancied there chances will all the mascara and foundation knocking around the lads toilets.

Lived local to me, and was a pretty nice guy by all accounts. I was surprised to learn that after all his success, he ended up living in a 'council house' in South Wales. RIP.

I read in his obituary in The Times there'd been a mysterious fire (the way I read it he'd been supplying drugs to Paula Yates prior to her death and may have been arson) at his house in early 2000s and he had no insurance, apparently moved back to his Mum's in South Wales.

Sad tale all round.

Well he never got royalties from Fade to Grey.
And as you say Visage were studio based only, so his income from the band will have been limited.
Drugs aren't cheap either

Fade to Grey is a great Legacy, it is the perfect pop song, amazing how many songs there like that from the 80's

His legacy wasn't really Visage, there were (are) other people who contributed a lot more than he did there. The Blitz Club - and the various others before and after - which he co-ran with Rusty Egan was much more important. The legacy of that was the New Romantic movement and a huge number of independent musicians, artists, writers and performers. Maybe something else would have happened anyway, maybe it wouldn't. In my mind the 1980s would have been a far worse place without it.
