How to record to mp3/wav?

I want to record mixes from my Pioneer mixer.

I used to REC OUT > LINE IN > Audacity on my old laptop with a line in. This laptop has no line in and I don't really like Audacity anyway so want to record direct to wav or mp3. Is it possible?

I'm sure I saw a wee device on Ebay from China which did it but can't find it now. They all seem to be voice recorders for recording from the air- can these be used or adapted in some way?

I don't really care about quality, they're only for personal use. Also don't want to spend a fortune as I get around to it about twice a year...

Line in is better if you have it, but if you've got a spare headphone out on the mixer for the final output you should be able to plug that through to the mic in on the laptop.

I use goldwave as my audio software. Didn't get on with audacity at all.

What laptop is it? Some have auto-line level detect on the mic input jack so you can feed a line-level signal into it.

Thing is I don't want to use the laptop at all. I want something similar to the old days when you'd hook up a tape recorder or MiniDisc and just record.

No software, no laptops, just recordings. If I can record my voice direct to mp3 why can't I record a mix the same way?

I've got a Tascam pocket size recorder. As well as stereo mics to record live sound it has a mic or line in on the top. Picks up fine from our mixing desk and records direct to CD quality WAV on micro SD.

MP3 recorders ain't cheap because not many people want them.

If you have a smartphone of some sort, you may be able to buy a cheap lead that plugs into the headphone or USB port and turns it into a powerful audio recorder. Check out:
