Guitar to USB.

On my iMac, I simply plug into the line in (3.5mm jack) to record some music. All well and good and works well with GarageBand.

Now, I want to do the same on my MacBook but do not have a line in, so I need a USB adapter of some kind. Any ideas? I see some, that all look identical on Amazon for £10-£30. That said, I also see guitar to USB cable for £5/£10. Is there any real difference?

As above, USB audio interface. I guess the cable things are just a small USB stick DAC with a jack on the other end, you may as well get the proper thing?
