Using headphones with an amp?

Hi all,

Complete guitar noob here, so be gentle..

I'm teaching myself (or trying to) electric guitar using a lot of the resources that get mentioned here.

Combination of small house, thin walls and housemates means that I can't play too loudly through the small practice amp I have without annoying everyone.

Is there a way that I can wear headphones while playing which will take into account the effects from the amp?

At the moment I'm just running a jack-to-jack cable from my guitar to the amps input - the amp does have an output on the rear (no idea what this is for - I told you I'm a noob).

Could I get an adapter cable which is 3.5mm female one end, and 6.3mm male the other to allow me to connect my headphones to the amps output?

I've no idea what the amp is off-hand, its just a little one I got with my guitar when I bought it (a Yamaha Pacifica 112), so I'd imagine it wouldn't be possible using my particular amp, so likewise does anyone have any small practice amp suggestions that would allow me to run headphones?

Most small amps will have a headphone socket, and possibly a line in for adding mp3 player. You'll soon figure out which is which

Bit of a left field suggestion but have you got an iPad? I'd recommend getting an irig and garage band or amplitude software. You have literally thousands of amp, cabinet and pedal combinations at your finger tips. Plus you won't ps off the neighbours

^^^^ Exactly that. I think different versions of iRig plug into iPhone, Android, iPad, Mac, PC. Look into it.

Would be a great solution as you will have a lot more sounds at your finger tips and can play along with tracks easily.

One other thing - the guitar still works when it's not plugged in.
