just watching a top of the pops retro thingy on BBC4.

i'm pretty sure i just spotted john peel playing mandolin on "maggie may"

did that happen or is it my eyesight ?

and, a revision to my "desert island discs" (can't find the thread so pop it in here) - "where do you go to my lovely" - peter starsted

Yes, they were mates at the time and Rod persuaded JP to mime the part.

Caused a bit of Musicians Union kerfuffle as they complained that a non-player was appearing to perform, it was also interesting for him to appear on the show as he had been banned from presenting for misbehaving a few years earlier and wouldnt appear as presenter again until 1982.

Schoolgirl of the year was a particular highlight.

The camera operators were told to keep him out of shot as much as possible, so the band stuck him right in the middle of the stage and performed around him.

One of my favourite TOTP clips; they're all having such a great time larking around.
