Metallica Live

When I was a teen I was big into heavy metal. I saw a few bands live, Megadeth, Therapy etc but never got to see Metallica.

I added all their albums on Apple music recently and have been listening to them a lot. I see they are going to tour Europe end of next year and assume they will come to the UK.

Anyone seen them recently, are they worth seeing live? They must all be getting on a bit. Do they play a lot of the old stuff or mostly new?

Would love to hear Blackened, One, For Whom The Bell Tolls, Unforgiven and Enter Sandman live.

Do they sell out quick?

They've been a lot looser and sloppier live since Jason Newstead left. The scary thing is the time since Jason left is now longer than the time he was in the band.

James and Lars has a couple of really bad years a while back, they seem to have tightened up. Kirk is as sloppy as ever, Rob Trujillo has a very loose style and clanky sound. Sometimes I can't believe it's three of the four people that made S&M and Cunning Stunts.

I saw them for the first time at Reading a couple of years back, and it remains a highlight of live music for me. Sure, you could probably pick out the bits where they're not so technically great, but in terms of getting a set list just right (don't worry, they almost always play the classics, check setlist.fm to see examples of recent gigs) and a shedload of energy then I don't think I've seen much better. It was just a very enjoyable show, and if you've never seen them then I highly recommend it.

Tbh though in a broader perspective, even when I've been a massive fan of a band and then been disappointed by the live show (Stereophonics jumps to mind, stop playing songs slower live than on the record FFS!) I've still come away being glad I've made the effort to go.

They are very much on my to do list, but keep managing to miss them.

Im hoping they will headline download next year.

Seen them a few times. A highlight was them doing the whole of the Black album at Donny.

Yes they can be a bit loose, and Lars' drumming is getting more on my tits as the years go by.

However, a great experience and a 'proper' band definitely one to tick off.

Think I've seen them 9 times now.

They vary in quality but always put on a fantastic show

Plenty of old stuff in there too even on specific album tours


Oh.... and also expect to pay circa £90 for a ticket these days which is galling.

I've seen them live a couple of times, each time outdoors where the sound wasn't great as the weather was windy. But their show at Glastonbury was tight as hell, certainly from what I saw on TV.

I've seen them a few times now. First was Big Day out in '99, then a couple more times when they played Sonisphere, probably 2011 and 2012?

Either way, they're probably one of the best live acts I've seen. Their live shows are exactly what you'd expect from the world's biggest thrash band, technical, played perfectly and plenty of energy (and fire usually!).

Also, their new material is really solid so I'd like to see some of the new tracks live, alongside the classics! \m/

Saw them at the Arena a few years back. They're OK for what they are. Y'know how some bands completely smash it live and you leave thinking *WOW* ?

That's not Metallica. As the above poster infers, they're just about what you'd expect from a world-renowned thrash outfit.

Cool I'll keep an eye out for the tour dates next year and go see them.

Know what you mean about the cost. My daughter wanted to see Ed Sheeran for her birthday and tickets to that were £80 a pop.

they were on tour in the uk at the end of 2017, I went to see them at the hydro in glasgow. Also seen them a few years ago on death magnetic tour. They were good, played a mixture of old classics/ newer stuff and some rarer tunes. They also vary the set list across the tour, follow them on instagram and you'll see they mix it up a bit.

But I would agree with the above comments- they are good solid 7/10 gig, but not a 10/10 wow that was the best show ever!

also, we paid £100 all in (after fees/ postage) for standing tickets in glasgow last time! ouch!

The ticket price last time was exactly why I didn't go last time - I couldn't justify over £100 to see them at the O2 Arena in London.

Two of their shows I've been to rate in my top 10 - Donington in '91, and Outside Lands (San Francisco) 2012. When they manage to get the crowd going they can approach the 10/10, but as mentioned usually solid..

i go back to the puppets tour with cliff on bass - the gig was at sheffield city hall and james had broken his arm in a skateboard accident so one of the roadies played rhythm guitar that night which was a tad dissapointing but it was my first ever gig so i was like a wide eyed kid (i was a wide eyed kid!) .

seen them a few times since, sheffield arena, Paris bercy all good I think Lars' drumming is possibly the weak link now he's not the young man he once was and some vids I've seen he can just let time slip a bit.

they are a proper full on band though and whilst they have become a bit of a machine they still do enough to rock out.

I seen them at Donny in 91,went to see ACDC and Black Crowes mainly. From memory it was the first of them playing songs off the Black album, i think they f*cked up the start of one of the songs and had to start again, stuck in my head! Maybe a false memory?

Saw them a few times in the '80s, lost interest after And Justice For All, mainly because that album quickly got old. Still listen to the first three albums though...
