You're missing something but I'm not sure what.

Had a quick look in my app and can't even see a shuffle option.

Are you using the actual Spotify app?

Are you using the web version of Spotify? While I haven't tested it myself, I have heard of the few second snippet that version, not really sure why they've changed to that version. Mobile versions of Spotify free version have the shuffle play with 'related' songs in between the actual songs you want. The desktop version is a lot more flexible without having to pay. You can play whatever song you like, just with adverts

Your conclusion is wrong- Spotify is an excellent app - you are doing something wrong or something is confused somewhere.

I’d delete the app, redownload and login again. Also login on web and see if that makes any difference

Usually once in my playlist in the app I just click the song I want it to start on and it will then work through the order you have them listed.

The shuffle button is purely to make the same playlist order random.

If so you can add Spotify as a service and use the Sonos app.

That's because you have the free version. So have to put up with adverts, the occasional random song thrown into your playlist, and it won't let you skip (or at least will limit the number of times you can skip).

I put up with it for a couple of years, but since signing up properly I've no regrets and wish I did so a long time ago rather than put up with the cheapskate version

Yep, I use the paid version.

Can make multiple playlists, download them to devices so you can play them offline (very useful when traveling abroad where WiFi is unreliable), good CarPlay integration, etc.

Try the paid version. You may be surprised.

They have deliberately knobbled the free version. Pay your tenner a month and it's sooo much better!

The free version through a mobile is rubbish - only has a shuffle option as you say, yet through a tablet or laptop it's fine, just the odd advert every now and again!

I have the full version ‘free’ with my mobile. But will happily pay £10 a month if it stops.
Play whatever I want, nicely integrated with Sonus. Not purchased any CDs etc since i’ve had it.

As an old person, it’s science fiction.

Sonus speakers around house. Spotify to play what I like ‘free’ via Iphone/Ipad
Skip track or change volume while walking about on Apple Watch.

Spotify monthly for the price of 1 album in the 80s! Bonkers. Bad for artists I guess..

Explain to someone who has used iTunes forever, how Spotify is worth £120 a year vs free itunes ?

Serious post - and I get that I have to purchase iTunes content.........

I tried it and did not get it all.

Works out better value with the family package with 5 users at £15 a month.
I tried the non paying version but had an advert every 2 or 3 tracks or listen to advert for 30mins uninterrupted tracks.
With kids as teenagers and early twenties they love the unlimited access.
I think I have 30gb on my phone just on downloaded playlists.
Paying per tune would cost a small fortune with my family

Click a 'genre' (ok there's a hell of a lot of 'styles' here really, some probably tenuous, but I guess that's the point), and it plays a sample (mousover to see what it is) or click >> at the side to go to an artist map for that 'genre', then on each of those artist samples the >> links to the Spotify artist page.

The payout is awful but its better than the illegal download sites that where heavily in operation before 2008 so at least there is some financial renumeration!

1 yes on the paid version you can play whatever you want, in any order, whenever you want
2 yes it will cache tracks you've played on your device. Of course if you try to access a track which has not been previously played, it will need to download it

I thought you were referring to what happened if you upgraded.
Data question was answered in an earlier post - some songs remain in cache.
