I bought my first drum kit in 1981, an old Olympic 4 piece with crappy Zyn cymbals.

Cost me £150 back in the day when that was a lot of saved up pocket money and paper rounds.

According to a random inflation calculator website, that equates to 570 quid in todays money!

I picked up an equivalent knockabout kit on ebay last year for £30....

It was all fields round here when I was a kid etc....

the cheap things today wont last as long, they really are disposable tat

In 96ish I bought a used Hohner kit for £200, in 2016 I bought a used Pearl kit for £200.

I think the main difference is availability - back then it was trawling through ‘trade it’ (or your free ads equivalent), now we have Ebay/gumtree/shpock etc.
