Desert Island Discs - whats good?

Im on a mission to get fit again and so am looking at things to help kill time at the gym

This is usually Motorhead or 170bpm techno but I fancied a change yesterday and so I listened to my first ever Desert Island Discs and completely at random picked Thom Yorke who was pretty dull

Thinking it must get better than this I hit the random button and followed on with Ian Wright Wright Wright who was excellent

There are many 'best desert island discs' lists online but you guys usually come up with the goods so what would you recommend please?

This I think will depend very much on who and what you find interesting. For example, as a musician I found the Thom Yorke episode to be fascinating. On that basis, you might not enjoy the episodes I have liked, but anyway, here are some of my favourites:

Stephen Pinker

Randy Newman


There’s a few to be getting on with. BTW I seem to enjoy Kirsty Young’s episodes the most, far more than Sue Lawley’s, in particular. Roy Plomley was good but those episodes are pretty old now.

Pretty sobering stuff he has gone through.

Oh, Im happy to listen to anything and have heard the surgeon bloke talk many times so will dip into that

Im not a musician however do have a passion for music of most genres but just didnt bond with TY

I loved the bit where he got fired up about inspiring teachers and named the one who steered him towards music.

Just remembered all of Clive James episodes are amazing, what in intellect that fellow had!

Yes! Wrighty had a major emotional moment talking about the teacher who had influenced and guided him

the bbc website has all the modern era DID episodes, except for jimmy savile and cyril smith , which are weirdly " not available ".

Dr Sabrina Cohen Hatton was a good recent one,she’s an inspirational lady to listen to,good music taste too.

Kathy Burke was an interesting one from what I remember.

Its quite amazing sometimes how dreadful the music choices are.


Fearne Cottons Happy Place is often a good listen too.

The Nile Rodgers one is worth a listen as well. His body of work is remarkable, as is his life and his attitude towards it.
