I'll start.

Only 14/15 and at school. Used to record the show every Friday night, then pick out my favourites during the following week. More important than girls back in the late 70s

A bland rock song and some godawful prog rock song. It has no meaning to me other than being something I wouldn't choose to listen to.

That theme tune still makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck - so evocative.

There's a Friday Rock Show Facebook group which has been sourcing and cataloguing and sharing all those home recordings that (mainly) young lads made back in the day.

Oh yes,that brings back memories although I can honestly say the name of the band is a new one on me,never heard of them

Same with most TV and radio theme songs. Most people have no idea of the source of the Top of The Pops theme, for example, but it's instantly recognisable to anyone over 45.

I'm fairly sure towards the end, Tommy Vance used to use a tune by Jan Cyrka as well, name escapes me right now........but hold that thought.


I think it was called Western Eyes from his solo album Beyond The Common Ground.

Don't know the name Jan Cyrka?
He was Flash bd in Zodiac Mindwarp and The Love Reaction

Yeah, I've got his stuff. He's an accomplished guitar tutor too.

By the stage of TV using his stuff, TFRS was already a pale shadow of its heyday though. I'm surprised it hadn't been moved to Radio 2

I remember one year at the Monsters of Rock TV came on stage and got bottled in good nature of course, the following year he came out with an NFL helmet on to protect his noggin
