I would imagine that all of you listen to music whilst you drive. Chances are, at some point, there will be exactly the right track, playing exactly the right time and in the right car. The particular car you were driving at the time might have not been very good but the surrounding circumstance make the memory stick.

Lest here them. We might even get to hear some great music we have never heard of, before.

I'll kick things off:

Crocketts Theme-Jan Hammer.
The year is 1989. It's a hot July night. I have my Akai house stereo speakers on the back seat of my Ford Cortina 1.6L. All the windows are down. My best mate and I are cruising along the nigh time city roads, heading for a nightclub. This is blasting out from my Technics cassette player (Posh model-it had a graphic equaliser and everything!). The streetlights reflect off the bits of paint between the rust spots and off highly polished chrome rings on my Rosstyle steelies. We were wearing Levis Chinos, White Bepe espadrilles, Sergio Tacchini pastel polo shirts and slightly too shiny suit jackets with the sleeves rolled up.......By the Gods, I miss those times!

ETA: We were 17. We didn't give a crap how we looked in the car, All we had to worry about was how I was going to get home after a night in the Nightclub downing Thunderbird!

Crocketts Theme biggrin

Me and two other lads were waiting sat on the wall at my mate Beakers's (not his actual name) house, he was due back from work and we were planning on going out. Beaker had just passed his test and was using his mums dark green Fiesta 1.1L.

Anyway, we wait, chatting and we hear the sound of a clattery pushrod Ford engine and Jan Hammers most famous work, he came round the corner wearing sunglasses with his head cocked to one side sort of aping Don Johnson on one of his mean and moody pensive midnight drives round Miami. You know, in the Testarossa obviously thinking about about the case, a woman or whatever Crockett thought of, might have been whats for tea tomorrow night (Chips or Alphabites ? hmmm) we will never know.

Anyway, he obviously thought he looked dead cool but we just saw a teenage tit in his mummies car thinking he looked like Sonny Crockett and simultaneously pissed ourselves.

Beaker was an only child not renown for having a sense of humour when it related to himself, he realised the jig was up and slammed the brakes on, switched off, threw his sunglasses on the passenger seat, got out and stomped in the house, slamming the door.

We were still pissing ourselves, we waited a few minutes more and then knocked on, his mum answered and was not amused, she thought we were really mean and he wouldn't be joining us. I dont think it was that mean, Andy had asked me a few days prior what I was getting my granddad for Christmas, he suggested a "blow up Grandma" which was in poor taste as she had died a couple of months before. So didnt feel too bad about him having a strop because we caught him out pretending to be Crockett.

His mum didnt like me much, Andy drained a bottle of Glenmorangie I won in a raffle once, went home and puked in his mums washing basket, and she blamed me for plying him with alcohol !

One night in recent years travelling East (ish) on the very flat, open road between Southery and Feltwell, it was dark, the sky was clear and I was travelling towards an orange supermoon.

The song 'Moonlight Shadow' just happened to be playing.

Strange but true but the one that sticks in my mind was the time my 850 T5 blew up at around the same time the sound of silence came on the radio, my friend with me at the time was like what are the chances of that.

Three years ago the wife and I were on a road trip in the US. We did two days in LA, drove over to Vegas for 4 nights, got married, then drove back across to Santa Barbara to spend a couple of days relaxing near the Pacific. We ended up driving from Vegas to SB on a US Bank Holiday, so as you can imagine the traffic was on the heavy side. We drove across to Barstow (right on the edge of the desert, and the drugs began to take hold.....sorry wrong film smile) then took a right and headed NW through the desert, up to the San Fernando Valley (iirc) and then down to the 101 to head up to SB.

We were in a rented 430i Convertible, and as soon as we got the 101 and the Pacific came into view around Ventura, The Boys of Summer by The Ataris came on. OK it wasn't the original, but it was still a fairly epic match of road and song.

Drive took us 9 hours in total due to the traffic leaving Vegas, but its still my favourite drive ever, based on everything from Barstow onwards.

Gosh, so many to choose from!

I am the same age as OP, so Crockett's Theme is one. My mates and I were all addicted to driving (grew up in Norfolk, so driving was a necessity and represented freedom), so come the age of 17 it was a case of how quickly can I pass my test? We used to get together and go for long drives, listening to our mix tapes. In The Air Tonight, Paradise City, Suburbia, Where The Streets Have No Name....

Blatting along the North Norfolk coast road, cruising the mean streets of Norwich, cruising the even meaner streets of Great Yarmouth at night...

And that was just at the start of my driving life.

Buzzing around in my new Vauxhall Nova Diamond in August 1990 to Queensryche's new Empire album. Crashing it 20 months later with Def Leppard blasting out.

Travelling around a few kitcar companies in 1994 (my first solo trip away from home) accompanied by Mike Oldfield's Elements.

Collecting an Eagle RV kitcar project. Towing it home on a trailer behind a friend's car the hardtop blew off into a hedge. Erasure's Respect blasting out.

First motoring musical memory was in 1979. "Pull up to the bumper" by Grace Jones, when I crashed my dads car into the back of someone. He wasn't happy as I lost all his hard-earned no-claims bonus...!

2004. It was a Thursday. On the previous Saturday I had been in Brum centre working and nipped out from the office and bought the Dark Side Of The Moon 20th anniversary edition.

Popped the cd in the car at the weekend.

On the Thursday was listening to it on my way to my opposite neighbour’s funeral (RIP Bern 49). “Breathe” was listened to, and the lyrics were read out by Bern’s son as part of the eulogy not an hour later.

About the same time as this, the Cortina mentioned in my original post got painted mat black with a screaming skull on the bonnet. The clothing changed to leather jackets, ripped jeans, Para boots, Many many gothic style rings and a "Somewhere in time" Tee shirt....

I had discovered Iron Maiden...

Sadly, This was the downfall of the poor old 'Tina. I ended up exiting stage left, backwards on a damp roundabout whilst thrashing along to "Run To The Hills", tearing the back axle out of it's mountings!

Back in the day when I had a recently purchased a 944 (second hand) I was heading north very early from. South London. Stopped for some fuel near the start of the motorway and as I headed out of the station onto quite a clear motorway, the sun was coming up, reddish sky, and "shine on you crazy diamond" started playing on the radio..

Da dum dah dah...felt like I was in a top gear video.

Without bringing the mood down....

......my best bud died too early.

One of my fondest memories was being on a road trip somewhere near Brighton when Breakthru by Queen came on the cassette player. We were proper singing, windows & sunroof open.

I became aware he was singing something a bit different to me. He thought the song was called Grapefruit. hehe

It's still a belting toooon

Many years ago my best mate and neighbour and I both decided on a vasectomy. To give ourselves the necessary courage, we booked at a clinic the same day, consecutive appointments. It was about 15 miles away.

After the deed was done, we jumped back - sorry, got carefully back into my car, the only thought in mind to get home before the anaesthetic wore off.

Once on the road I slipped a cassette into the slot with a specially prepared tape.

Jerry Lee Lewis.

Great Balls Of Fire.
