Getting back to playing the piano

Hi All

Been over 20 years since I played piano and now my daughter is 9, it might be fun to get her started and I could tinker too.

I dont have room for a real piano, so interested in what the next best thing is. I remember clavinovas being a thing back in the day - this sort of thing:

Is that still the case or should I be looking for something else - keyboard or whatever? Ideally I want to pick up an ebay bargain locally, if it goes to plan potentially buy something "nice" later on.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clavinova#History helps get a feel for how old a model is. A CVP3 will be over 30 years old - they're well made but anything electronic of that age can have issues. Those have lots of buttons and sliders to go wrong, but a thorough check over should show that - I wouldn't want to buy one unseen.

Clavinova is pretty much the default people think of for digital pianos so there tends not to be bargains, on the flipside they hold their money very well so if you can spend a bit more you'll get it back later. Less upfront cost means going for the less regarded brands like Casio, who put out some great stuff but are known more for cheap kids keyboards.

Thanks, had a Casio and a Yamaha keyboard as a kid too. I dont mind buying a Casio/Roland clavinova alike if they make sense.

I want it to feel like a piano, so a keyboard isnt an option unless it has that weighted feel which I think some do?

Casio have been making good (at the more budget end) digital pianos for ages - look for the Casio Privia stuff.

Yamaha also have a budget digital piano range below the Clavinova, the Arius / YDP range. Worth looking at too.

Great thread, I was going to start one similar, I too am going to get back to Piano after 35 years (where did that go !) and have been browsing ebay ! My friend has a Clarinova, great thing, I think it was about £1600 new 10 years ago, so I'm going to see what model that is and see how much they are 2nd hand...I figure if I don't get into it, I can sell for more or less the same price

I should say I was holding out for a Black Friday deal but there were none

So Ill look to buy it for Christmas and save the fun till then. I have a car to put back together in the mean time.

Mrs M (keen pianist) says be aware of keyboards versus digital pianos and then the feel of the weighted keys on the digital pianos.

We’ve got a Roland as in her opinion it felt most realistic.
