Watching a film last night which featured the music of Bruce Springsteen it occurred to me that I’ve no idea of what he’s currently putting out.

I seem to listen to the stuff that I’m familiar with from my teens/20’s/30’s either on YouTube or very occasionally play one of my cd’s.

Do you follow your favourite bands latest? Do you listen to new artists? Or are you like me and a bit stuck in the past?

Or even have you lost interest in music altogether?

"A good beat's a good beat".... as Alan Partridge once said.

I tend to keep an open eye and mind on music. Classic / Indie Rock is my go-to genre but I'm prone at times to enjoy the likes of The Weekend and Dua Lipa as well.

In normal times, I do a bit of Party DJing which forced me to keep track on current music but over the past year, I've lost track and - to be honest - interest in anything new.

While I tend to be listening to more classic rock from the seventies, my nineteen year old youth has also introduced me to to some of the more recent popular beat combos.

A mix...

I'm a lifelong fan of electronic instrumental music so I'm always dipping into Jean-Michel Jarre, Vangelis, etc. along with some little known modern artists who produce similar stuff. Do a lot of drawing and painting in my spare time and mostly listen to Enya when I'm doing that. Love '80s synth pop, soft rock and pop in general and also love a lot of modern pop, particularly by female artists - currently feeling a lot of love for Dua Lipa, Ava Max, Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus and similar. Also love uplifting trance tracks by Alex M.O.R.P.H. and similar. Like to listen to the radio to keep up-to-date and discover new artists and then explore the ones I like further via streaming services. Usually buy their stuff if I really like them as I believe in supporting artists whose work I enjoy.

I'm 46 YO for context.

All sorts, rap (try avoid the stabby stuff), rock, techno, indie, house, jazz, blues. Tend to go through phases of listening to one genre then get bored and move on, been listening to a lot of rock recently though.

Sound like me! Going through a modern blues phase at the moment, try Christone “Kingfish” Ingram.

I got rid of all my records and CDs and now I’m totally 100% streaming on Spotify. Yeah I know it’s not the absolute pinaccle in quality but with its playlists, suggestions, release radar and daily selections based on what you play it really does give you a much wider range of music to enjoy. It builds a dynamic lists of your most played songs and at the end of each year gives you a Playlist of your top 100 or so songs played that year. It’s interesting to look back over the last few years how much listening habits have changed. It’s great for finding stuff you would never go and buy and actually finding you enjoy it and you can also share lists and songs with friends. I now feel like my music taste is so much wider. The extra bonus for me is that it’s included in my phone contract and i don’t pay that my employer does

I saw Dua Lipa on Graham Norton and was smitten in a non pervy way, or at least I hope so.

YouTube searching bought this up. Dua Lipa and St Vincent. I've watched it a few times.

I'm the opposite of craigjm.

I tend to play all the stuff I liked from my youth (80s Rock) and the bands I followed beyond that, adding a select few on the way. I don't tend to widen my choice too much as i have a great selection that never bores me already.

yes

One of the best blues guitar players out there. His feel and vibrato make Bonamassa sound amateurish, IMO.

Back on topic.......

My car radio is hard-wired to BBC R3 for the mix of classical / opera / jazz.

As for other genres, I draw the line at Country & Western (although Casey Musgrave has recorded some good stuff) and Rap. Grime (??) does nothing for me, either.

"Go To" stuff will always be:-

Blues
Classic Rock
Grunge
"Lounge" music like Sinatra and Bennett

When I stumble across modern pop, I do like the work of Dua Lipa and Billie Eilish.

Good that! May end watching that several times myself.

On occasion I have need to operate on the peripheries of the music biz and know a few people within who tell me that she is a thoroughly lovely person devoid of any of the diva-ness that falls upon similar acts. Doesn't make any difference to me but nice to know nonetheless and justifies her presence on my list of substitute wives.... should ever the need arise.

In the car, I've got an MP3 player with about 600 tracks on it. I've got every Stranglers track starting from the first song on the first album, going through to the last song on the latest one, with a selection of B-sides and stuff. That takes up just over 200 tracks, so the other 400 are many and varied, and the only annoying thing is that I haven't changed them for so long now that I can usually remember the next track. I have a load of other music here, I work from home in the morning and I intended to start playing through at least one album every morning, so far I've done about three and don't usually remember until it's almost lunchtime.

When I'm working on the car, I have Radio 1 on. This isn't as terrible as it might sound - I'm not really into modern music, but there's very little that makes me want to turn it off. And I'm usually making a noise anyway, so it's not as if I hear all that much in any detail.

I'm old and probably sad!

So I still listen to Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Rolling Stones, Thin Lizzy, Queen, etc.

But also Alice Cooper, The Clash, Stranglers, Boomtown Rats, Undertones, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Pretenders, Blondie, Transvision Vamp, Garbage,.....

Discovered Def Leppard, Whitesnake, Oasis, Blur, Nirvana, Sleeper, Suede, Supergrass, Ash, Guns 'N' Roses and many others later.

Then I found the Foofighters, Green Day, Stiltskin, Nickleback, Radiohead, Muse, Primal Scream, Linkin Park, Kasabian and more.

But now and again I get drawn back to some Stevie Wonder, Crowded House, Evanescence, Goldfrapp, Eminem, Dido or even early Elton John!

The only genre I have never ever liked is Country & Western.

I love the comment about spaghetti on that video 😅

I discovered St Vincent fairly recently too and now have all her albums.

I've always liked female vocalists, another I discovered in recent years is Joan As Policewoman.

I buy a lot of used CDs and rip them, latest were by John Coltrane, Dave Brubeck, The Isley Brothers and Peter Gabriel.
