There are many top bands or artists whose music I don't especially enjoy, but I recognise that they're good at what they do none the less. (see Robbie Willams and Adele for example)

Then there are those where I just can't fathom how they achieved any level of success, let alone world fame.

Top of my list would be Coldplay. Basic songs, dull tunes, not a great singer, musicianship not above most pub bands, how on earth have they made it big??

Who's success do you find hard to fathom??

Adele and Ed Sheeran. Nothing outstanding about their songs that merits the success.

I heard them on the radio doing some live stuff this morning and was thinking he was a bit flat, though I'm no expert.

I struggle with most of the top-selling acts, whether it's the ones that sound like they're singing through their nose (Ariana Grande etc.) or the obvious auto-tunes, or the ones that sell bucketloads despite the radio friendly version sounding like it's by Norman Collier, or the shouting-over-a-back-beat whatever that's called these days. I've decided it's just me who has different taste than the majority. They must be doing something right, they've all sold loads more than I ever will.

The Grateful Dead always springs to mind when this question appears.

Watched the Bob Weir documentary and still don't get it.

The problem with chart success is that it's a popularity contest, not a quality contest. McDonald's sell millions of burgers but that doesn't make them great food.

There are acts that I really don't like listening to but can appreciate what they bring to the table. Queen falls into this category for me. I can't stand their music but accept they could really play, were talented song writers and had a front man with genuine stage presence. Then, there is Crag David. It almost offends me to think anyone who could come out with the utter bilge he has is considered a leader in his genre and respected and admired. I'd be embarrassed to play those songs to close friends let alone release them to the general public.

The only reason Coldplay exist is so that there’s music to play in shopping centres and lifts.
I thought Brian Eno took care of that wink

I never 'got' Coldplay until recently... I always found their music dull etc. However their newest album isnt as bad as their previous. Ive also grown to like them to the point I can tolerate them... still abit of me is abit like 'hmmmmm'

I dont get Twenty One Pilots... they seem to have a real proper following but it makes no sense to me at all.

I don't get all the hate for Coldplay. I love their melodies, I love their lyrics and I love their production. I get that one band will never be to everyone's taste, but I struggle to reconcile some of the negative comments with music that can cause me and many others to feel such profound joy.

I agree on Adele and Edd Sheeran. They are both utterly brilliant at what they do, it's just that most of what they do isn't of any great interest to me.

Surely if you want to talk about being baffled by the success of an artist you need to be looking at rappers who shout unintelligibly over four bars of someone else's track on a constant loop. I really don't get that, or why anyone else would get it.

I get that.

However, I get Coldplay from a musical perspective. I may not like their tunes, but the song writing and composition is quite clever. Same with Adele; not keen on the tunes, but well crafted and the vocals are sublime.

But, back on topic, my nomination is The Rolling Stones. A catarwauling lead singer, backed by a failed lead guitar player on rhythm, a lead player that needs to use one less string than normal and with an open tuning to sound convincing, and a completely anonymous bass player. Charlie Watts was a great skin basher, though.

Bowie, he couldn’t sing, the songs are all senseless bilge. I simply don’t get the attraction unless you’re high on glue.

Glad I'm not the only one. And glad you stuck your head over the parapet first, too...

Just don't "get" them. Never have. About as "relevant" (in my eyes) as the Goombay Dance Band.

Oasis - i just don't understand the absolute worship that goes on for them, at best they were above average.

Morrisey - Miserable git yet i've worked with guys that think he is some sort of mystic.

Muse - all very talented musicians and supposedly amazing live but leave me a bit underwhelmed to be honest.
