Canadian rockabilly singer Ronnie Hawkins has died at the age of 87.

He may not be that well-known on this side of the pond, but the backing band he put together in the late '50s, the Hawks, became Levon and the Hawks, then, after a gig as Bob Dylan's band, virtually invented "Americana" as The Band.
