So, 16th June marks the 50th anniversary of The Rise & Fall of Ziggy Stardust & The Spiders From Mars. There was a documentary on Radio 4 recently, available on BBC Sounds, which I found a bit disappointing really.

Anyway, one of my all time fave LPs, I've actually fallen for the marketing hype and ordered the commemorative re release on picture disc, a snip at £35.99 rolleyes

I think the original cost me about £2 in about 1974.

It was a year later that I saw the Ziggy Stardust tour in Taunton. Prior to that it was at the Festival Hall, June 3rd 1968 when Bowie mimed in support of Tyrannosaurus Rex.

Never forgotten.

I've never been a Bowie fan but I have this album, in vinyl, which I bought late 70's.

It's a great album with no duff tracks, and as the cover says best played at full volume.

....I was usually stoned on Red Leb, P@ki black or something back in the day when I listened to it, perhaps that's why it endures for me. Otherwise never really 'got' Bowie

The first Bowie album I bought was Aladdin Sane back when it came out and I loved it! Featuring Twig the Wonderkid too. laugh

Then I discovered Ziggy Stardust - it's the only album I have ever owned on Vinyl, cassette and CD. Even now I still play it from time to time and every time I keep thinking I should play it more often.

Strangely enough, the first album I ever bought, aged about 12, was Ziggy. I actually went out to buy Aladdin Sane which had just been released, but tried a few shops and got blank looks from everyone (A lad what??) so went home with Ziggy instead. No regrets tho and I got the other album shortly after.

Are all Ziggy albums very floppy vinyl, or were some relatively normal?

My copy is , ooh missus, floppy.

Great album though.

So it arrived, and it looked great, was really pleased I'd splashed out. Then I played it, and it was dreadful. Just a terrible pressing. Looked on Amazon reviews and 2 others had made the same complaint, so not just me getting a duffer. So it's gone back to Amazon and I won't be reordering. Shame really.

I've seen a few reports now of the new Ziggy picture disc arriving with a warp etc. Pic discs in general will never have the best sound quality vs black/coloured vinyl but you'd still expect it to be decently functional. There is a half-speed mastered edition that was released at the same time, & costs about 8 quid less than the pic disc, & I'm hopefully picking up one this weekend

For some reason i dont play Ziggy much these days but my main thought about it is that in the space of 5 years (see what i did there ?) we'd moved through Ziggy, Aladdin Sane, Halloween Jack, Thin White Duke et al and arrived at Heroes.

That's some evolution.

By pure coincidence I'm watching the final Ziggy Stardust live show when I saw this thread.

It's a shame Bowie never (IMHO) did anything that good after Aladdin Sane.

I was born in 1970 and I've been a Bowie fan pretty much my whole life, and have seen him perform live in the UK, France and the US.

I bought an original vinyl version in about 1983, and I still have it.

It's a shame the latest pressing is poor quality. frown

What a bummer

How does this happen?

Bowie was a genius and his music will no doubt be played until the end of the world
