Girls just wanna have fun by Cyndi Lauper was absolutely guaranteed to figure on the playlists at every one of our teenage parties in the Eighties.

I've only just found out it's a cover of a completely obscure 1979 album track by some bloke called Robert Hazard, who I'd never heard of!

Anyone else got any famous covers which they always thought were original songs?

It was many years before I found out 'Hanging on the Telephone' was not an original Blondie song

Went through the entire '80s through to the early 2010s not realising that No Escape by Chelsea was a cover of a song by The Seeds.

See also I Drove All Night by Cyndi Lauper, was originally Roy Orbison but wasn't released until after his death so technically a cover version

And Dolly's version is a million times better than the warbling and waily Whitney! (For a surprisingly great cover of Jolene - see Miley Cyrus)

I like the story that Col Tom Parker wanted to rip her off for the writing royalties if Elvis were to sing it so she had the sense to tell him to go away & made a fortune from it.

Which was a cover of Chopin’s prelude 28 or at least a sample…

"Because the Night" by Patti Smith, much better than the Springsteen original.

'Nothing compares 2 U' by Sinead O'Connor

Took me some time to find out that it was originally written and recorded by Prince.

There wasn’t a Springsteen original- Springsteen wrote the song and recorded a version for Darkness on the Edge of Town but it never made the album. So the song was never a cover.

Never realised Adele’s “Make me feel my love” was a Dylan cover. In fact you could argue it’s Bully Joel cover because he released it a month before Bob Dylan (although Dylan wrote it).

Who is that a cover of? My version says it was written by Annie Lennox and David A Stewart
