This may well be the subject of long dead previous thread but here goes:

We know about some famous ones:

Don McLean's American Pie - Buddy Holly's death
The Beatles Taxman - Wilson's frightening income tax rate.

As I don't take much note of song lyrics, e.g. I didn't figure U2's Red Hill Mining Town was
about the 1984 miner's strike.

It really encapsulates the frustration of a Sunday, doesn't it? You wake up in the morning, you've got to read all the Sunday papers, the kids are running round, you've got to mow the lawn, wash the car, and you think "Sunday, bloody Sunday!"

I always thought Luka by Suzanne Vega had quite a poignant story behind it, the lyrics too are hard hitting.

From Wikipedia,

'A few years ago, I used to see this group of children playing in front of my building, and there was one of them, whose name was Luka, who seemed a little bit distinctive from the other children. I always remembered his name, and I always remembered his face, and I didn't know much about him, but he just seemed set apart from these other children that I would see playing. And his character is what I based the song Luka on. In the song, the boy Luka is an abused child—in real life I don't think he was. I think he was just different.'

10cc "I'm not in love". Eric Stewart's wife kept moaning that he didn't say he loved her often enough.

The Fall "Susan vs Youthclub" is about an episode of Neighbours in which Susan slips and hits her head on the floor. She awakes with concussion believing she is 16 again and goes to the local youth club where she can't understand why all the kids are looking her in a strange way. Then she looks in the mirror. The second verse is about leaving a set of dentures in the car of Badly Drawn Boy.

Lisa Stansfield’s “All Around the World” is based on the costly and time consuming search for Madeline McCann.

Deep Purple - Smoke on the Water.

....a fairly prosaic event that became the basis of an iconic rock anthem

Not a popular song, but Seven Shades of Blue has quite the story. There’s an audio link on this page: https://themoth.org/stories/seven-shades-of-blue where the songwriter talks openly about how she struggled through the writing process.

I’ve been to a couple of her workshops, truly inspiring insight into creativity.

James Taylor's "Fire & Rain", apart from being a fantastic piece of acoustic guitar playing, is very personal.

It deals with the suicide of a friend, his subsequent time in a mental institution, and his period of recovery.
