While waiting for the kettle to boil, I suddenly had this thought.

What would you call (as in genre or type like "rock", "trance", "folk", "baroque") a style of music that's non-acoustic (ie no violins, piano, flute, harp, acoustic guitar) but has no vocals or drums/beat?

Thanks.

Ambient, conceptual, minimalism are three that spring to mind.

I'd add Drone or Ambient Drone to the list....Rafael Anton Irisarri and Abul Mogard are my particular favourites of this genre. Fulfills your criteria perfectly.

If you like that there's a whole genre out there of this stuff, fantastic if you're in the right mood for it.

Thanks, that is interesting although not what I'm looking for. It also has stuff like guitar (I guess I should have been more specific). But it's something I'll have more of a listen to when I'm in the mood. smile

...Ozrics were my first thought then I noticed the drums proviso. TBF they are very much driven by drums and bass

Oh yes, I've been listening to that kind of thing recently, specifically Carbon Based Lifeforms VLA, 23 and Stochastic albums.

Steve Reich is brilliant.
The concept of Minimalism is excellent.

Thanks. Certainly interesting and creative. The clapping one must have taken a lot of practice!

I’ve had a go at performing it, it’s difficult.

There's a guy on YouTube called State Azure. He does a lot of ambient on synths, has live streamings and does some great covers. Tangerine Dream inspired.
