Any Trumpet Players?

My Mum used to play cornet in the Salvation Army Band when she was a kid, as did my Grandad. She never kept it up but did trade her cornet in for a trumpet shortly before she gave it up. I have been wanting to learn to play it but she lost the sodding thing 
! Anyway - she found it last night under some old rolls of wallpaper she was nagging my dad to get rid of 
!
Tonight the racket commences!!!
The problem I see is it's not surfaced for about 5 years so it will need a little TLC. I have been reading a lot of conflicting advice on t'internet. Some say you should litteraly give it a bath, while others say do nothing other than oil the valves and grease the slides.
As for learning it, I have a good ear and can play guitar and bass to a high standard. As with most rock/blues guitarists, I know the fundamentals of reading music but I don't sight read very fast. Do I need to improve my sight reading much or can I learn a load of scales and blag it?

I used to be a brass player, and know lots of them. They to indeed periodically bath their instruments. Take the valves and slides out, give it a dunking and let it dry out. Vaseline should be ok to grease the slides, and you'll need proper valve oil for the valves.
What I would do is get some lessons, at least to start with. There's lots of potential for learning bad blowing habits early on - if you have someone good start you off, you'll at least get going on the right foot, and not have to unlearn bad habits later on.

Played for six years when I was a kid. Used to strip and bathe it every six months or so IIRC. Spent the first 10 minutes of each lesson doin breathing exercises for the first couple of months. Great for lung development. I've sorted the trumpet - greased the slides and oiled the valves (is copper slip and Mobil Motorsport OK?

Really well thanks! I'm really good at it now and can often be found in smoky jazz clubs, performing extended improvised free-form jazz solos to beatnik types who refer to me as 'Lips'.5 years on you must be quite good?

)Actually, I may have twisted the truth a little. The trumpet is sat in its case under my desk and gathering dust. Changes in my job etc. meant I never found the time for the lessons. I'm a bit busy with my house now but I do keep promising to do something with it when I have finished sorting that.
I cannot remember the teacher's full name and I've lost his details. IIRC he's called Daniel. I got the impression he was a student and did a bit of teaching to pay the bills. He had a website for his band and he looked impressive from the video footage.
