Guitar strings

For a newby to guitar playing, what strings would you put on your guitar.
Some are suggesting 9s and some 10s....

Strictly speaking your guitar would have to be set up differently for different gauge strings, but the short answer would be to go for 10s - more substantial tone. You can't go wrong with a set of D'addario XLs!

I like Hybrid 9-46's .... thicker bottom three (wound) strings from a 10 set to give a nice tone, and thinner 9s on the top three to make it easier on the widdlier bendy stuff.

Saying that, depends on the guitar. The above is on a strat. I'd never put less then 10's on the Les Paul.

Patrick Eggle Berlin. I have bought a set of regular Slinkys to try. 10 - 46s.
Thanks for the advice, it is a bit of a personal subject but we will see how I get on.

Certainly go for at least 10s. The heavier the better IMHO, but lighter ones are 'easier' to play with. But therein lies the problem. When you move to heavier gauges, you will really feel it.

My strat came with 9-42 fender bullets. They were ok but went out of tune a lot. Replaced them with dean markley 9-42s and they stay in tune pretty much all the time, sound better and last longer. I have been replacing them every couple of months or so. I did try some 9-46s which I had lying about and it lifted the trem up loads so either replace like with like or get it set up again.

Are we talking acoustic or electric here? Mind you, I've put electric strings on my acoustic a few times

For the electric I try and fatten up a single coil by using 10's on the top 3 and 9's on the rest. My Les Paul sounds muddier (better) with 9's all round than 10's

Resurrecting a ten year old thread to ask the same basic question - what are the best steel strings for an acoustic guitar?

I have a fairly old guitar (Rockson - bought 1985) which is of average quality but makes a decent sound. The strings are well past their best so do need replacing.

An alternative suggestion - Elixir Nanoweb Phosphor Bronze (some of those words might not be in the right order) -https://www.elixirstrings.com/guitar-strings/acoustic-phosphor-bronze-nanoweb-coating.

A bit more expensive than regular strings, but the tone is sublime and they last for ages. My main guitar these days is a Taylor Big Baby and Taylor specifically recommend using Elixir strings, but they sound fab on my old Yamaha APX as well.

Seconded ,just starting to use them and very impressed.
