Was/Is Beck any good?

I remember this guy being mentioned loads back in the day, and always meant to check him out, but for reasons I can't understand (I only got into Godspeed YBA last year ) I seem to have suffered from Music-Aquisitional Apathy this past decade. Any recommendations, or havent I missed anything?

Beck is immensely talented guy, his music has many style and he's great live!...I only have she change on my iPlod, its in the style of lonesome cowboy music very good if a little down beat...it was written after a long term break up, poor lad
