A mate was telling me the other night about a band that's fused Satriani-style rock guitar with trance music. Usefully, he couldn't remember the name of it, but it did get me thinking what could be done if you combined the more cerebal melodies of rock or indie with the beat of dance music. Can anyone recommend any good crossover bands/tracks?

Crystal Castles are like this but without any Satriani style solos.

I nearly had a 'Tyres' moment in the office listening to that...

That Armin van Buuren stuff is still a little too far on the trance side for my taste, but sounds a lot like the description, so we might have a winner! The tone is a little bit Satch even if the style isn't quite the same.

Completly self produced, self released and utterly fantastic...

Enter Shikari is rather more on the metal/emo side though, no?

If asked to describe it I would call it dance metal. Nice keyboard work, awesome rocking, bit too much shouting. Good tunes though.

Yeah, the phrase screamo did spring to mind in places. Some great riffage though. music

Fricking Sweet. Definitely more Enter Shikari than Satriani though

Here's some rather ambient stuff from Outrun The Sunlight: http://soundcloud.com/outrunthesunlight/quark-ii-t...

On the alternative metal side, it's also worth checking Chimp Spanner.
