It's amasing how he gets the drums out of that 8 string guitar.

Seriously NICE.

I can appreciate the technical prowess (albeit for only a short period of time).

But I am unmoved. Which is what art's all about.

It's a 'meh' from me also !

Steve Vai did all this a long time before . . ..

I'm not doubting this guy's talent tho . . . but it's nothing new . . .

(I'll get my coat now . . . !)

interesting take.i'm well versed in the satriani/vai stuff from the early nineties but(aside from the shredding)i can't see the similarities at all.abasi seems far more jazz based and his sonic range seems much more low end oriented.hence it's as heavy as fk!!

I've talked with Tosin and Chimpspanner a few times over the net. Another name you will probably see bandied about a bit is Bulb, he is a super cool guy and has an amazing collection of guitars, but I don't think so much of his band (Periphery). Chimpspanner has done some great work with what appears to be a pretty limited budget, he is very talented. Not Tosin Abasi level good, but very good all the same. Far, far better than I could ever bother myself to get!

AAL have some of the best riffs going, I don't think Tosin's soloing is great but his riffs and ability to play over some crazy chord changes is very impressive. The short video of him playing "Point to point" on his custom built 30" scale 8 string is one of my favourite guitar vids, I nearly shat my pants with joy when I finally heard the album version of the song with the drums, it's mind blowingly good biggrin

Try as I might, I just can't get into this sort of stuff. Just doesn't seem to be able to hook me in. Same as the overly technical direction a lot of death metal has gone. Sure it's all very clever, but it just seems like it's for the sake of it a lot of the time. Hey ho. New Weedeater CD out, so that satisfies my urge for heaviosity smile

ETA - talking of guitar driven, and not (for once!) doom or grindcore, anyone else heard of Vektor? New to me, but it's glorious old school thrash http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZv-pvsF5Xk&fea...

Extra ETA - digging around in old thrash and speed metal videos uncovered this absolute gem from Anacrusis. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDGZN8eD5J0&fea... Haven't heard that for about 20 years, and can actually remember listening to that exact song to psyche myself up for my driving test! I passed.

Not moved at all, true it would be boring if we were all the same but there are a million shredders doing the same thing on youtube albeit with much less interesting guitars.

where does it become 'driven'? It's just jazz noise to these ears.

I'm digging up all this stuff on YouTube that I'd long since forgotten about. First it was Anacrusis, now it's Athiest and what appears to be new(!) Watchtower.

And Blotted Science, which is probably up Tuscaneer's musical street?

I have the guitar playing talent of a polar bear wearing wicket keepers gloves, Olga from the Toy Dolls however seems to be able to rustle up quite a decent tune.
