I've been playing for a while now, and I am interested in getting U2 and Pink Floyd sounds, while still being original enough to get creative with the band. What guitar/s, amp/s and pedal/s should I get?

There are tonnes of options, if you want a floyd/U2 sound get something like a strat or les Paul, fender hot rod amps are nice but not to everyones taste, also both guitarist use a huge amount of effects including racks and big pedal boards. Have a look on the Internet at each guitarists effects as I'm on my phone and don't really want to list 100 odd pedals. But there is a lot of info on the net you can get.

The Edge's sound is basically a delay pedal. The big green Line 6 delay box is the best one of these really - anything more and you'll want something on a rack mount.

Other than that, good tone is important. A decent smallish valve amp, a Boss GE-7 for clean boost, and an Ibanez TS-9 (or TS-808 if you can get one) for making it dirty will be about right.

I'd go for a Strat "type" of guitar. If you're not planning on blowing yr windows out I'd be tempted by one of Fenders transistor offerings (some with built in FX) . FX-wise it'd be a multi-fx. These are very programmable & you'll be able to emulate the u2/Floyd sound with no problems. Another plus is that you can stick some headphones into the FX & practice/tinker without upsetting anyone! The sounds would also be in stereo too for added Edge-like realism. Boss do some great multi-fx, I had the GT-8 & one I'd sussed it out found it really good. Zoom are worth a look too.

A Strat will be essential to get a decent Gilmour tone, or something with three single coil pickups at least. IIRC, effects-wise, DG doesn't (or didn't) use a delay just an analogue effect like an Echoplex.

If you want a lot of variety in tone and effects how about a web-based interface? Line 6 had their Guitar Port which allowed you to choose from a range of effects and user-created combinations and also amp modelling, metronome, tab, etc.

Watch 'It might get loud' - bit more than just a delay pedal going on, but, yes, their early stuff was more simple, You'll have to learn to play less while making more noise smile

His rig is mental now, looking at pictures on the web. But the essence of his sound is still that delay pedal, most of the other bits are novelties used for specific bits in specific songs.

I've never owned one but I have played a very well loved one on a number of occasions.

It played very well - fairly versatile in sound but it was hotter than a strat and I think you'd struggle to get the brighter strat sounds from it.

Would I own one - I've been tempted on a few occasions and it's only the aesthetics that have lead me in different directions...

What would be better, a Boss GT8,GT10 or an Eband?

None of the above. Get yourself a small setup of stompboxes. Am I right in thinking the GT8 and GT10 are in the £300 region? If so:

Line 6 Echo Park - £100
Ibanez TS-9 - £75
Boss Blues Driver - £60
MXR Dyna Comp - £60

That little lot should get you going...
