Hi guys,
I've done numerous trackdays in various cars, & i've decided i now really really want to start doing something competitive smile
Now i've read about a lot of different series/events & i believe i've narrowed it down to 3 or 4 that i really like the look of.
I know its expensive, & i accept that, although that said i don't have the means be buying 50k worth of 911 to race!
The formula i choose must be reasonably cheap (in motorsport terms i mean!), must be RWD or 4WD, & i have to be able to keep the car in a road driveable condition! (I dont care how impractical, i just mean an MOT must be possible, for trips to Nurburgring etc)
I thought I'd ask on here as I see a lot of you guys race & really know your stuff. smile
I currently have a lightly tuned classic Impreza, & while i love the car I can't help but think the cost of repair (clutches/engine failures/etc), and the fact that something a bit smaller & RWD could be more rewarding, even if it isn't faster.
I have been seriously looking at the following;
MR2 Challenge; looks limited enough in terms of tuning for it to be about driver rather than money, & looks fantastic fun. I've always enjoyed the handling of the SW20, I've had a couple of them. Plus the car could be a good little trackday car, which would be fun & help for practicing smile
MSV Trackday trophy; Either in my Impreza, or something like an M3 or MR2 Turbo. Looks a good mix of cars, plus the 'race pretty much any car' theory works well for me.
Nippon GT250; Again in impreza or something different, haven't really looked into this one as much as the others!
Finally i'm considering the HSA Sprint series, probably in my Impreza, but not sure this would give the same buzz as a 'wheel to wheel' formula?
SVG Pre '93 touring cars, This again looks great fun, either an early E36 M3 3.0 or similar.
I'm just interested in people experience in the above formulas, or suggestions for any i may have not seen? I also saw the MX5 series, but i'm 6ft3 & to be honest while i know they are amazing little cars i look/feel a bit rediculous in one!
Any advice or suggestions would be great smile
Thanks guys,
James

BRSCC Porsche 924s?? RWD, cheap to buy/maintain, very competitive racing and a friendly championship. In fact, just £2,750 would buy you a fully race-prepped 924............

Hi all,
Thanks for the suggestions, i did consider Time attack, but the thing that put me off that was that it isn't wheel to wheel really, more like a sprint series. I know there are other cars on track at the same time, but not really the same.
The 924 series could be fun actually... I'll have to look into that.
Does anyone here have experience of MR2 challenge, HSA Sprints or the 924's? Opinions on all would be good, either positive or negative.
Thanks smile

I did my first seasons racing in the 924s last year - they're a great bunch of people, helping each other and sharing resources. It's surprisingly cost-effective, and 924s are a great car to learn in. I only did 6 races, and was last in 5 of them hehe but I had a great time. Upgrading to Boxsters next year, because, well, I want to!

Definitely worth a look - the cars are cheap to run and you don't get RWD racing much cheaper!

If you did like the idea of lightweight, and mx5 drivetrain, the MEV Exocet race version has it's own series next year.

You may not feel so silly in one of those. smile

924s, 944s, Boxsters, MX5s, MR2s etc can all be used both in their own series and in CSCC series such as "Future Classics" or "Deutsche Marques". The beauty of this is that the more places there are to race a particular car then the easier it is to sell on later; there's the chance of more racing if you can afford it; it gives the option to just race regionally in a couple of series; and the CSCC series are 40 minutes long races for one or two drivers (compulsory pit stop for a driver change or simulated change) which means that you can shares a car (& costs) with another driver.

james,
Have you considered the Classic & Sports Car Club's "Future Classics" series? It's intended for "Sports, Saloons and GT cars (with doors) from the 1970s, 1980s with some 1990s cars with Committee approval". The regs are fairly free but written to discourage mods that are costly, and the series goes to both the 'Ring and Spa every year. An MX5 could fit into the '90s' slot, but as it says check with them first.

See: http://www.classicsportscarclub.co.uk/futureclassi...

That depends, do you want grids of 40 cars or 20 cars......

for a novice I would reccomend smaller grids.....
