I am racing in the welsh sports and saloons and am a newcomer. As such I believe I need to buy or rent a transponder from tsl-timing. They appear to be £350 and am considering renting as I need them. I would also be interested in buying a used one if I knew what to buy. So any comments on buy, rent or used appreciated.

If you buy one it will always have some value, fetch good money 2nd hand. If your doing 1 or 2 races and giving up then renting is best. if your doing more its a no brainer buying one

I do see them on eBay but don't know if they're the right ones - they often seem to be described as motocross transponders, eg:

AMB Personal MX Karting Race Transponder Motocross Moto Cross Orange tracker

Anyone know which type is needed?

My research has indicated an AMB 260 or equivalent. It appears the 160 is for karting (something to do with range and speed) and their is an MX for moto cross.
Of course the 260 is far more expensive!!

Yep - an AMB260 is what you need. The others are designed for use on dirt bikes or even remote controlled cars and won't work at higher speeds, apparently.

There's two types - the fit and forget fixed one, which is wired in, and a rechargeable one which you need to charge up but lasts four days. Both have pros and cons.
