As a newcomer the class I am likely running in requires list A1 tyres. It's a big list and I wondered are there semi slick tyres on the list or are they all standard road tyres and what would be a good compromise with regard performance vs value for money. It is my first year so being very competitive is not a priority. Also is there an advantage with worn or scrubbed tyres.
Permitted tyres are listed in the Blue Book which you will get with your competition licence. Those in List 1A are considered to be standard road tyres, you will not find any in 1A which could be considered as Track Day or Road legal slicks, they will all be in the 1b list.
1a still has a large range to choose from. It depends on what car you plan to use and what sort of events you plan to enter but generally you would probably do better on a softer tyre than a rock hard compound which is designed to last a gazillion miles. Brand new tyres do benefit from some scrubbing to remove the release agents which they will be coated with, just a few miles use should be enough. Personally I am not convinced about the benefit of shaving tread off and as tyres tend to harden with use really worn ones will probably give less grip even though there may be more rubber on the road.
The difference in grip and driver confidence levels between normal 1a rubber and sticky 1b is significant as is the step from 1b to slicks.

We have to run List 1A for the class I run in the metro cup. Must guys run Yoko A359's.
Buffed list 1A tyres last longer than standard ones as the knobbles move around & overheat more with deep tread & come flying off. Also, because with less treat moving about, buffed tyres inspire more confidence.

Which series are you planning to run in?? Is it racing or hillclimbs?
1A list is pretty extensive. Having looked at racing, if the choice is free then Yoko Advan Neova AD08 are the tyre of choice (used by the quicker cars at Castle Combe Saloons). Hillclimbs, please seem to favour Marangoni Zeta Linea Sport (it's meant to be soft). Yoko A539 is used as a "control" tyre, but is an old design and probably can't make newer designs.

Based on what I've seen at Combe..
For the dry: http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/performance/tyres/yo...
And as a wet weather tyre: Uniroyal Rainsport 2.

In the lotus 7 club championship when list 1a tyres were used the best ones were skudo stunners made by marangoni and for a list 1a tyre they were great.I did pretty well on them too.Dont know if they are still listed in the blue book though.
No, no longer listed.. were too soft. Maragoni Zeta Linea meant to be similar.Huw, best advice i can give you is forget List 1a, you'll have to buy new and 1 new set will cost you more than 4 or 5 sets of used slicks, not only that but there is a strong chance you'll be either alone or 1 of a very small no. of cars in your class so will have no one to race, I was totally against a treaded tyre class because in reality it doesn't make racing cheaper when you can buy used slicks for £60/set, they all bang on about it being cheaper but it is just not and it's alot less fun, buy yourself some used slicks and have a go, then swap to treaded and you'll see what i mean in an instant

I used Sticky Slicks but there are a few lads down at Pembrey that can get them......what wheel size are you running?
Thats fine (and good advice for cheap tyres), but not many championships run open slick "control" tyres. If you are track daying it though, yes, used slicks might work (roll cage needed, and a change of tyres to and from).
I have two sets of rims- one for my racing days which is a control 14" slick, and a set of 15" rims with R888s..
(Either way the car is not road legal!)
