MSV Trackday Trophy (and Team Trophy)
Discussion
I was hoping to get my son into this series this year; as usual, things conspire against us, so he may join at the back end of the season, else it'll be 2013.
Anyway, my woes aside, I'm still very interested in following those who have managed to get themselves in - I noticed a few hands go up in the 'who's racing what' thread.
It'd be great to hear how you get on: the trials of getting your car prepared and, subsequently, maintained during the season; lessons learned/tips for newbies etc. Anything really. Knowledge is power!
For me, this series appeals because it's run on a bhp/tonne class system rather than simple engine size. This (should) mean that throwing money at a car to derive every last bit of power and remove every last gramme of weight isn't the name of the game and that a track-ready car can compete against genuine peers.
Interesting to see that for 2012, MSV have removed Class A from the entry-level Trackday Trophy and added a Class E. So this year's classes are:
Class B: 151 – 175 bhp/ton
Class C: 126 – 150 bhp/ton
Class D: 101 - 125 bhp/ton
Class E: Up to 100 bhp/ton
(for the avoidance of doubt, these are calculated on hp at the wheel)

Correction, Power is calculated at the hubs,(by Tdi) not the same it would seem. Class C: 126 – 150 bhp/ton
Class D: 101 - 125 bhp/ton

If you have the output measured on a local rolling road it may be very different to the official measurment !
Great series though.
A lot of competitors that used a rolling road figure last year are finding themselves moving up a class because of the higher output reading.
I assume that a lot of power is soaked up by the wheels/tyres turning and friction by driving the rollers, non of this applies to the hubs measurement as the device bolts directly onto the cars hubs, wheels are removed.
Impresive peice of kit,...... and impresive results

Very interesting. Thank you.
I had noticed the use of the term 'hubs' in the regs but thought that it had been selected to ensure no confusion between 'wheel' and 'flywheel'. What you say makes complete sense though and I'm pretty sure I've seen such machines in action (on Youtube etc.)
I'm not far from TDI - their website seems very 'top end motorsport' focused though. I was rather hoping they'd do 'Saturday morning rolling road specials' so I could pop the car down there for an interim power test while I'm getting the car prepped - so I know whether to chase an extra bhp or two, or to back off on the weight removal, to ensure I hit an optimum point within a Class.

It'll only take 1/2 an hour- they should be able to fit you in. Were very helpful with us. A good friend of mine helps run this series (he works for MSV) - I looked into running in it in 2011 but simply put I couldn't afford it.
Seemed a great series though, with good spread of cars and some great battles with sensible driving.
Interesting they've taken out Class A. Why is that? It was designed as a cheap form of motorsport but I do recall a few chaps at the front spending serious money on a custom built race car (within the regs) which just romped out the front.

After writing an article on the series at the start of last year, I became the serie's volunteer Press Officer - writing race reports/driver interviews etc. I've found there is a particularly friendly and approachable atmosphere in the paddock, with people on hand if you have any queries or need a hand setting up your car. Some more reading if you fancy.
I built my S2 lotus to run in the track day trophy last year and had great fun, a real friendly group of people and a well priced series the regs allow pretty much anything.
This year I am running a Ginneta G20 in the Team Trophy and sharing it with a friend to share the costs,
Check out the trackday trophy web site the first trackday trophy race this year is on th 24th of march with the team trophy the following day.

I was chatting about this with someone the other evening. Seems that rolling roads who measure at the hub are few and far between. Which means that if people set their cars up to a TDI-derived bhp/tonne this year and then TDI fail to be the RR-tester of choice next year, it could seriously throw people's target class set-ups.I assume that a lot of power is soaked up by the wheels/tyres turning and friction by driving the rollers, non of this applies to the hubs measurement as the device bolts directly onto the cars hubs, wheels are removed.

I looked into competing in this last year, then found other people were running clio cup racers!
They sounded nice as they came past you though
on the down side there was an element of 'checkbook' racing going on though , but hey I did enjoy it , and hope to be back this year funds pemitting

First round this Saturday at Brands.
The TDT website is disappointingly quiet. The 'teams' page is still showing the 2011 line-up and I can't even see a list of entrants for this round.
Even on the events/tickets page there's no information about the races, the timetable etc.
Bit diappointing really, both from a competitor and audience perspective.
