Just trying to spec my next allround competition car used for classic road rally with "tests", autosolo / autotest, the odd hillclimb / sprint. Although all of the events I do would allow standard seats / belt / no cage, my previous car (MG Midget) had a 4 point harness and a full cage. This was great on the hills / sprints where I wore a helmet and had the harness really tight and I was glad to have this set-up when a fellow competitor repeatedly rolled a Mini at Goodwood and walked away, clearly saved by the cage.

However, I used that car on the road and rallies where we aren't helmeted. It seems to me that I am more likely to have a 10mph accident and in this case the cage was very close to my head. Even with rollcage padding I wouldn't want the two to meet.

I have read that race seats and a harness without a cage are bad in a roll as you can't get out of the way of the roof in the event of a roll.

Also, I want to be able to carry children in the back seat without them dashing their brains out in a minor accident.

So, I don't think cage, but maybe some kind of hoop? What about seats / harnesses? New car will probably a Mk1 Golf or similar.
