Hi

It's the HSCC Historic Touring Car Championship (www.hscc.org.co.uk) If you have a 69 Beetle you need to simply bring the body back to 1965 spec, so early wings, lights bonnet and engine lid.

Mechanically it needs to be torsion bar front and swing axle rear, engine must be a magnesium 1300cc Type 1 with VW twinport heads and so long as it runs carbs anything goes. Any brakes can be used, gearbox must be 4 speed VW but gears, diff etc are free.

Mine cost £15,000 including buying, restoring and tuning so in motorsport terms very cheap!

If you are really keen, speak to Alan at GAC (formula Vee manufacturer) who built my car and engine (http://www.vwracing.net/)

Would be cool to see you...the more the merrier!

Class D that I'm in (1151-1300cc) is pretty much 8 Mini Coopers and 1 Ford Anglia. Lap time wise I'm ahead of 4 of the Minis and the Anglia but the 4 fastest Mini's have a big power and weight advantage over me, but my engine next year will see to that!

You'll be racing with a wide range of pre 1966 Touring Cars: Ford Mustangs, Falcons, Galaxies, Lotus Cortina's, Cortina GT's, Anglia's, Alfa Romeo's, BMW's, Mini Cooper's, Hillman Imp's, DKW's, the list goes on.

On skinny 1960's tyres with no grip...Good fun

What tyres do you run? And what sort of power do you get out of your engine?

I had a look at the calendar, do you get to do the eifelrennen ? I did that a few years ago with the cscc but they haven't been back for a couple of years which is what's stopped me jumping back into the swinging sixties.

We have to use Dunlop L or Dunlop M Historic Crossply tyres. Treaded but not road legal and despite being a soft compound...not a lot of grip which is good because it evens up the big and small cars slightly.

Currently my 1285cc engine puts out around 115-120bhp, but motions are in place to build a 1298cc motor with 140-145bhp version but I won't see that for at least a year as the Crankshaft, Cam, Exhaust etc will all be one-off bespoke items. (££££)

The tracks The HSCC Touring Cars race at are pretty consistent each year, Donington, Silverstone (GP and National), Brands (GP and Indy), Croft, Cadwell Park, Oulton Park and Snetterton 300. On the rare occasion we get an invite to support the 6 hours of Spa. If you stick to Appendix K rules you'll have more choice as you can also enter the Silverstone Classic etc.
