So i've got my racer
Discussion
Hi
So i after attempting to build my own race car out of a BMW 328i i decided it would be cheaper and quicker to buy one pre prepared. So off i went and now in the garage sits a 318IS racer that was raced in the NSSCC. So a few questions from me.
Would it be a good idea to put the 328i engine and running gear in? If so how much would the cost be on this.
Also i am looking to do the Track Day Trophy where you can share the car with another driver. Where would be the best places to advertise a shared drive in the car and also how much hassle would this be and what price range should i be asking for?
Thanks

it depends were your planning to race it and what the regulations are, and what class it will put you in. see how competitive the car is likely to be as is or with the other engine. So i after attempting to build my own race car out of a BMW 328i i decided it would be cheaper and quicker to buy one pre prepared. depending on your skills an engine swap can be expensive and add in all sorts of reliability issues.
I'd be temepted to run the car as is for the first season to get to grips with things. then if you need more power / blow up the existing lump look at swapping motors

I wouldn't recommend sharing with someone you don't already know and trust, as its bad enough when your mates and someone crashes / blows up the car..only do it with someome you know and trust and even then have a solid agreement on what happens if it goes pop / gets crashes and how your going to split the driving.
put it this way if your not happy for them to go away for the weekend with your wife / girlfriend don't share the car with them

sorry to be cruel, but sell it & buy a E36 M3 if you want a cheap BMW
318 has a shocking power to weight ratio (only 150bhp: same as a modern 1600 hot hatch but twice the weight)& a 328 engine gains you all of the weight of 6 cyclinder without the go of a M3, engine conversions are never easy, yes 'it will go straight in' but getting it running properly will be a different matter, you will end up spending more than you could by an m3 for

A 2.8 swap is really easy, fitted one to my Compact - bought a donor car for £400 & fitted the whole front end from the 2.8 into the Compact - subframe, suspension, hubs, everything - all fits straight in & then you can a 2.5 inlet, remap it and end up with around 220bhp.
Had no running problems with mine - was all done in a weekend.
Obviously an M3 engine would be better but then it's going to cost a lot more than £400.

Hi all thanks for your comments. Yes it is the car in the picture. I have a 328i spare. Would it be neccessary to change the suspension. Or would it just be a set up change on what i already have? Noticed a problem today previous owner changed the head and some of the bolts from the rocker cover to the head are threaded so they are just sitting in the holes. Kumho series has always interested me. Maybe do a couple ofevents on invitation class?
