I'm looking at a car for sale that's had a custom-designed roll cage fitted about 7 years ago.
Do cages have to be certified as meeting a minimum standard? If so, what's the process for something that's not off-the-shelf?
I'm also assuming that the regs will have changed since it was built, so it could also need modification I assume?

The MSA Blue Book is where you'll find the relevant information. Follow the link below to the relevant bit.

It can be quite complex..Do cages have to be certified as meeting a minimum standard? If so, what's the process for something that's not off-the-shelf?

What is the car? Single Seater, Saloon, Sports?
What are you going to use the car for? Speed events (Sprints & Hills) may have different requirements than Race or Rally.
What other modifications have been made to the car
What is the engine size?
Is there a Roll Cage Certificate?
If it is a one-off design, then the cost of getting ROPS (Roll Over Protection System) certified is extremely complex and expensive. I know of one going through a certification process just now and I expect the bill will be well into 4-figures...
Hmmm. So, it's a custom design and I don't know if it has a certificate. Do you have to produce the certificate at every scrutineering session?
If it doesn't have one, what's the process for getting one?
It's a saloon car, incidentally, that I'd like to race in something like the 360MC 6 hour, and other series like that.

if it complies with the msa spec in the blue book, then it doest need a certificate. If however it doesnt doesnt comply then it will need to have a certificate. If it doesn't have one, what's the process for getting one?

This is because the msa spec is belt and braces, a manufacturer will have the capability to optimise the design and prove strength with stress analysis ect and hence will have the cage certified.
chances are if its a one off it will be built to blue book regs so will not have a certificate.
The tuscan cage differs from blue book spec and is msa certified ( i do have a pdf of it somewhere) but I've never been asked for it.
