Hans or no Hans
Discussion
Interesting video of a low speed accident in a rally car. Driver doesn't have Hans on and co-driver does.....

I had to have it for a series I raced in once. Was a bit annoyed about this at first as it wasnt originally stipulated and obviously its quite an outlay of cash. However, my investment was nigh on immediately returned as it saved my neck in a crash. 100% worth it and wouldnt race without one now
Wouldn't even think of getting in a racecar without one - Basilar skull fractures have taken away some very important race-drivers from us - if they were wearing a HANS, thsy may still be with us...

They'll be made compulsory within the next few years I'll wager

I think the MSA are waiting for the clubs to bring it in by themselves. I bought mine as a package with a new helmet from GP Racewear at Silverstone - haven't tried in the car yet but I know the harness is "compatible".

Chris.
I know of a case where the driver sustained a broken collar bone, because of waring his hans! Admittedly it was a very heavy side impact caused by some btcc wannabe using the grass and losing it in a big way. However, problem was caused by the hans preventing any movement of the central area of the shoulders, but allowing movement to the outer area that bent around the side of the device. Food for thought.?

All Harness are compatibly (at least in-date ones). There are Hans specific harness which shouldn't be used without (2" shoulder straps) but 3" straps work fine as well. I have the Hans Adjustable but if I was buying again I'd likely buy a Simpson Hybrid Rage as that resolves the side impact issue as well.Chris.

I think they'll struggle Chris. Its a safety issue so surely the governing body rather than individual clubs should take the lead?
There are other systems that are intended to do a similar job. There was a company at Autosport this year selling a system that supposedly stopped sideways movement too - think it used the same tethering method as HANS but was cheaper. A friend of mine bought one so we'll see how he gets on with it.spyderman8 said:

Mark Higgens Motorsport where selling the Simpson Hybrid range which looks to be the answer to sideimpacts.terenceb said:

Broken collar bones are a bloody painful, inconvenient nuisance. No-one ever died of a broken collar bone. Edited by terenceb on Monday 3rd March 04:40
