Hi all,

Bit of a random one, hope I have posted in the correct place?

I need to buy a new racing suit, and am wondering if someone could help me out with choosing the correct size? I am looking at an Alpinestars FIA approved suit from Demon Tweeks, however the sizing leaves me a bit stuck.

I am 6ft 3" and fairly slim, (weigh approx 11 stone/73kg, 32" waist) and the only size option on many of the suits that would fit my height, would also require me to put on 10 inches on my waist and gain 5 stone...

Can anybody of similar height/build give me some recommendations of what size to go for? Here is the suit, the size chart is located below the details:

http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/motorsport/race-suit...

Any help would be much appreciated. I don't want to order the suit only to get a size that does not come close to fitting! If you can recommend a better/different suit for similar pricing please let me know.

Cheers.

Have you considered paying the extra to have it tailor-made.

I did this when I got my last suit from DT and I seem to remember it was around the £80 mark. That was a few years ago though.

Only one data point, but at 6'4" and 34/36W, I'm comfortable in a Sparco size 62

You do really need to try on, you want plenty of movement room in your shoulders, Pending your body leg / upper torso length different makes will fit differently.

Another recomendation for Sparco here.

You really do need to try it on and note that not all suits are the same for sizing, I tried a 62 on at Autosport that fitted me OK, little tight, but the prices they wanted were high so came home, got on ebay and bought a 64 for a bit of extra marging only to discover that it was a LOT smaller than the 62 suit I had tried. I’m a large fatboy, so am struggling with FIA suits that fit, would appreciate details of people who do reasonably priced custom suits.

There is a company called AWS in Ashford, Kent, which makes beautiful suits and will bespoke size you one in about 10 days. They start about £400. I have a retro style one of theirs, it's nice.

I'd recommend the custom made route - it's the same price as a top line suit, so you might as well have it made to measure in the exact style etc

Speak to Tony Murray he's the agent for FreeM here in the UK. He did me a made to measure suit last year. Ultra lightweight as well . Very happy with it. I'll PM you his details so you can contact him directly

Custom made is definitely the besy way to go, but when G-Force messed me about and couldn't deliver in time I made do with an off-the-rack Sparco and a pair of higher Alpinestars boots to make sure I had full coverage on my long legs.

Another vote for AWS here.Nick has been most helpful to me recently. Can you beleive after 5 years of not using it my suit had shrunk! In less than a week it is retailored and ready for use

I've had suits from AWS and Stand21 over the years. AWS is your budget end and it does feel like it. Stand 21 on the other hand is proper gear - I'm a fan. However it's multiples cost wise.

Tony Murray (FreeM) is a friend of mine so no surprise I've ordered my 2014 gear from him. Bespoke design, good kit and supplied to a number of BTCC, GT and Supercup teams. Also a lot cheaper than Stand21 so sits in the upper mid point of the spectrum.
