How does everyone transport fuel when you're racing/testing ?

Some garages are really tight on how much fuel they'll let you take in Jerry cans 20lts max is apparently the legal limit. And it does worry me a bit carrying 120lts of fuel in the boot sometimes !

I haven't had any trouble (yet wink )filling up as many as 5 x 20L cans. I also tend to fill the race car up too at the same time. biggrin I've had the same thoughts about all that fuel going up too! yikes

My interpretation of the law is. As a private individual you can carry legally 240L of fuel in multiple containers no larger than 60L.

You can carry larger volumes if you are operating as a business. And of course you can take even more with ADR Etc.

Yep - Done a bit of research as well - transporting isn't really an issue main problem around here is trying to find a petrol station that will allow you to fill up containers !

I've generally found that if a fuel station will let me fill one 20l can they will let me fill as many as i like.

I have had some refuse to let me fill any !!!

My truck has twin long range diesel tanks, I keep considering disconnecting one and turning it into a petrol tank. ( i can allways hook it to an on board genny lol.)

as we can get most places and back on the one tank.

means i dont have to carry jerry cans, just need to sort a fuel tap

120 litres in the boot?

I put my jerrey cans in the race car, strapped into the seat and behind it.
If you have a race car that you can't do that with, then fuel can racks on the trailer. Widely availble for 4x4s.

If I was in an accident, I rather the race car burnt than me.

Speak to the local PLA (petrol licensing autority) at your local council. The law is pretty confusing and needs clearing up - as long as your not storing the fuel they are quite flexible, they were really helpful in fact. If you can get the PLA to agree and then discuss with the petrol station you'll find getting fuel easier.

Just beware if taking ferry to race in Europe – I got pulled in by customs a couple of years ago en route to Spa, and when they found I had 2 x 20 litre jerry cans with Shell’s finest super unleaded in the tow car, insisted they be emptied before I could proceed. As the race car was already brimmed, I had to find two lucky members of the public who were somewhat bemused by a late-running race team offering 20 litres of free fuel…………

I find it strange that cars can drive round with 13 gallons of fuel in a plastic tank under the floor, vented to atmosphere without concern but as soon as it's in a sealed container in the boot there seems to be a problem!

I always fill the comp car up with Optimax and take three or four jerry cans in the back of the van and never had any problems with the garage.

A long time ago I was told I was only allowed to use "approved containers" so I asked who had to approve them and following a few seconds silence was allowed to fill up.

loaded for my trip to donington tomorrow, 60 ltrs in the race car & 5 x 20 ltr cans full, oh and 2 full bottles for the air jacks, nice and safe.

yes ive been turned away before for trying to fill up to many jerry cans, with no valid explination, best method, I find is not to draw attention to yourselfs during the act, ie park at the furthest pump always get the cans out on the far side of the car away from the cashier only one at a time as you are filling them if poss, often they dont even notice you have been filling cans
This tactic noramally pays off

Like most others here, I've had a "free and frank exchange of views" with the pod-people running forecourts. Fortunately, I've found a local place that doesn't GAS what I fill up, but when using "strange" filling stations I adopt the tactic suggested here; filling up as far away from the office as possible & not drawing attention. I've only ever not got away with it once. I do use "proper" jerry cans.

And I don't transport fuel in the car (Disco), either. There's only a canvas flap separating you from the "boot" and that isn't going to stop 40 litres of spraying super unleaded.
