Hi chaps

Has anyone had an exhaust system made for their race car ?
Primary reason I'm looking is for weight saving.

Can't be that expensive - a few bits of tube welded together wink

yes it can be and it usually is, Its not the welding that costs its the time needed to fabricate something one off on the car that takes time, and hence usually costs a fortune.. especially if you want someone good. expect to start at a grans and go up.

Sorry it was already on the car but have a feeling it was expensive - their website does have some prices on it.

I bet you don't get much change out of £1,500 for even a simple custom made exhaust from the collectors back, up to £5,000 if you want full titanium. Headers maybe £250 per cylinder? Just guesses, and based on a 15-25yr old car, not an E92 M3 for example.

I looked at something similar last year for a 944 S2 and ended up replacing the middle box with a straight stainless steel pipe (£100 fitted) and buying a Flowmaster Stainless DBX Series Race Muffler (£250 fitted), on the basis that more of the weight of the current system is in the back box. I forgot to measure the weight difference but would guess 2-3kg. I had the new unit grafted to the existing exhaust pipe bends.

Eventually I replaced the Flowmaster with a standard OEM 944 S2 unit, because the Flowmaster was just a bit too loud and I can't be bothered with the hassle of scraping under track day noise limits. I think it sounded great outside the car, but inside it got to be annoying.

PTR Exhausts in Brackley (near Silverstone) are superb. I, and all the people that have gone on my recommendation, have been very happy with the results and the cost.

It can cost a fortune to replace an exhaust, and some of the systems we have seen are terrible and the welding ste. We are therefore making our own but unfortunately we can only do it piece meal due to being busy at work and a general lack of time.

Up to now we have made the main silencer and the pre silencer. Next job is the intermediate pipes and then the headers. Here's where we are up to now:

As you can see, the welding is second to none smile

You can't go wrong with Chris Tullet. Absolute top class workmanship and not a complete miserable so and so to deal with like some others are.
