narrative for mounting GTR mirrors

Time to get on with finishing the car...which only needs mirrors and a trip to the inspection station.

I've looked through the photos on the build CD and can't make out what to do to mount them correctly. Anyone have any words of wisdom to accompany the photos?

Depending on which version of the build manual you have you should have some measurements to show where they go. What's a bit confusing is that the base of the mirror overlaps the polycarbonate side window. The manual also shows using a spirit level to get the faces vertical, I found that quite difficult and made sure I eyeballed them from the front to make sure they were symmetrical. Minor changes in the rotation of the mirror will cause quite big differences in appearance.

Mine are fitted as per the manual but I am not happy with them. The general field of view is OK but anything in the middle distance is hidden by the wing.

I am going to start experimenting with lowering them as the advise from the factory indicates I should be looking under rather than over the wing.

Going to make an ali plate, mount the mirror to that then fix the plate to the existing holes. If that works I will just have to bite the bullet and drill new holes.

Same for me too Steve - I find if I lower my head a bit I can just about see below the wing.

There's no way you can suss out the right position for you really until it's too late.

I really can't say I fancy making more holes in my doors

I may be speaking out of turn here, 'cause I don't have my GTR kit yet... But, can't the builder sit in the driver's seat and have someone help from the outside to find the best position before mounting?

That would work if you had 1/4 to 1/2 a mile of straight flat road leading away from your garage.
It's the distant part that is the problem.

Problem is you don't know where the wing will be till you fit it. I suspect the actual field of view without the wing there is fine wherever you stick the mirrors unless you have them too high (which will place them further inboard).

Seems a guy could place all of the electonics and fit them almost at the very last. Oh, well... That's no problem; just have to use LCDs and cameras!

One other note, the mirrors are designed for right hand drive. So when adjusted for LHD the mirror glass is out of the housing on the right side and positioned way down in on the left. Unless I just got the wrong mirrors with my kit or they've changed them since.

Jeff, is the right side mirror convex and does it have the "OBJECTS IN MIRROR ARE (LOOSING) CLOSER THAN THEY APPEAR" on it?

Unless the US ones are different, both mirrors are convex and without markings.
