Had a fantastic time at Charlotte Motor Speedway with the NASA group in a solo driver's ed. Nothing can touch the Ultima. GTR was strong and reliable and was going about 170 down the back straight into the banking. Enjoy the video. Cheers.

Click on link or go to YouTube and search Ultima GTR Charlotte Motor Speedway.

The GoPro Hero HD cam was mounted on the roll bar in front of my helmet, btw.

wow the Ultima is untouchable compared to them. Even the corvettes couldn’t even keep up!! How many HP are you running and what engine is it?
Btw nice driving skills are you a professional or is it just a hobby that caught on?

Thanks. I am not a professional driver, but I am a Certified Porsche Club Instructor after years of HPDE's. My Ultima has a N/A Chevy Small Block with 560Hp and 8K redline. I have over 500 foot pounds of torque from 5K rpm to over 7.5K which makes it a versatile passing machine. I also have a G50 transaxle with a higher ratio 4th and 5th gear, CMS cable shifter, big race wheels/tires with Hoosiers, front splitter, front sway bar, and corner balancing. It is finally a formidable track machine and a joy to drive.

Good to hear about an Ultima GTR being put to good use and showing it's superior qualities to others. Congrats.

Very observant. Just after the video ended, I pulled into the pits because my gauges went out. Turns out the fuse blew, so no big deal. Also, I never could get my Tach to work since buying my Ultima and since it only goes to 7K rpm, I switched over to the large racing tach on the dash.

This may seem like a daft question but why is it better to have a higher revving engine then an engine that revs less but with more power ?
Also what is your take on this engine?
ON BANKS' ENGINE DYNO, THE BOOSTED SMALL BLOCK CHEVROLET TWIN-TURBO V8 PUMPED OUT 825 HP AT 6800 RPM WITH PROPER INTERCOOLING RUNNING 91-OCTANE GASOLINE AND PUSHING 12 PSI. PEAK TORQUE CHECKED IN AT 695 LB-FT AT 5700 RPM. ON 100-OCTANE AND 20 PSI THE V8 GENERATED AN IMPRESSIVE 1,115 HP AT 6800 RPM AND 905 LB-FT OF TORQUE AT 5800 RPM.

Because in a light car it is difficult to get that torque down and if you did get it to grip you would most likely blow the gearbox. Less torque more horses is what you want.

I have to say your aspirations for over a 1000HP seem to me to demonstrate a failing to understand the car. Turbos are also IMO wrong for the car as again you are just going to break grip as the turbo kicks in. Supercharging has more chance of success.

David: Nicely done, very aggresive when the door is open, but nicley conservative when other cars are close. I have had my GTR at Fontana in California. I love driving the car on that track, but the banked turn, they only use one, drives me nuts, I just don't seem to be able to feel what the car's doing on the banking and not confidant enough in my skills at that speed to correct it if it got loose. Any suggestions or thoughts. Lee

My only suggestion is having a well balanced setup. My Ultima is easy to correct for over and understeer, unless for some reason the rear brakes get over aggressive relative to the front. I run alot of front brake bias to help. Under power, easy to control and feel the car. Still, quite pucker factor to take banking at speed for the fear of a tire blowout. I also examine the tires after each run, in addition to wheel torque and tire pressures. Thanks for the comments.

thank you for the insight that make sense. the reson i am thinking of tuning it to 1000Hp is because it is the same price if i had it setup for 650HP as it is for 800hp or even 1000HP

That's like saying youll get 20 or 21" wheels because you can get them for the same price as a nice set of 18"s.

Cheaper and bigger/more powerful, doesn't make it better.

Do you drive at the moment? What do you intend to use it for when built? You say you haven't worked out a budget yet, but you must have a rough idea. What are you prepared to pay for a gearbox, driveshafts that will take that power? How will you keep that engine cool, have you thought of that.

Which G50 variant do you have and what mods have been done to it?
Did CMS do the work on it?
How does their cable shifter feel along with the rest of the gearbox?

Reason for the questions is that I have a nicely prepared g50-52 built by CMS with their side shifter and have been contemplating their shifter as well.

I have a G50 03. Renegade hybrids did the conversion using CMS parts. Here is a link to my shifter. http://www.renegadehybrids.com/CustomCars/Pictures...

I love the side shifter conversion. It feels just like shifting a Porsche. Nothing notchy like the rear rod shifter. I can shift so much faster now which makes the GTR much better on track.

Also, I had 4th and 5th gears switched to longer gears by one of the big Porsche gear shops. (can't remember the name or gear ratios) 4th gear will go to about 170 at 7K rpm and 5th will go to about 220.

The only issue I have had was to beef up the wheel on the side shifter as it developed a bit of play. Local machine shop took care of this.

Good luck.

Dave

The shifter that CMS provides is a really nice piece. The side shifter as David said works quite well with one caveat, the damn rod that attachs to the back of the sfift rod and controls side to side motion is a prefectly round shaft no flats no splines. As David said this causes this to come loose and get sloopy. I have fixed mine by building a thicker course threaded arm so that you have more materail and a course thread to apply pressure with. I also drilled a spot in the shaft for the set screw to engage. Thats all well and good, but CMS who does good work overall needs to spline this shaft. I write this note because I hope somebody out there is getting ready to buy this kit. I also hopes he puts his foot down and says no splines no sale. Believe me at the price of this kit you are not asking for the world. Lee

Do you mean by drive race? then no and I don’t intend on track racing. I want to use it as a street car that is daily use capable if needed. I do have a rough idea I was going to buy a ZR1 till I found out about the Ultima GTR so that would be roughly my limit ~ 80k to $120k because if I spend anymore it will defeat the purpose of buying an ultima and not just going with a regular sports car.
As far as the gear Box I read on the Ultima webpage that their Gearbox can take up to 1000HP. So that’s what I thought would be the cost of it as stated in the homepage. The cooling is a problem because where I will be driving it the temperatures can reach in the summer about 50c or 132F so Banks engineer said I will need to use water/ meth mix to keep it from detonating if I wanted the 1000HP setup but if it was 800HP water meth won’t be needed.
Your thoughts pleasesmile

Some photos of your shifter would be useful to help visualise what you have.
