Has anybody fitted one of these in their Ultima yet and if so how is it?

I saw a couple at the open day and the change mechanism looks like it could be easier to automate than a G50. Is there a automated shifter out there and has anybody fitted one?

Think Graham has a 997 box, or was it a 996?

No, I've the 996 box, although having just returned from Wilton House it's making some strange noises, I do hope it's not another rebuild!!!!!

I hear your thoughts about automating the 997 box, but another consideration is that the 997 box was designed as a cable shifter from the get go. Give the P car engineers thier due I will bet you that a proper cable shifter attached to a 997 box would be a pretty clean set up. Lee

I was thinking the same thing Lee. Start with a cable shift with the option to change to an automated shifter at a later date.

Sorry to hear about the noises Graham. Check your drive-shaft bolts before you do anything else. They may have worked loose.

Are independents able/willing to get parts and work on the Aisin Ai (997) gearbox yet? I know that was the problem with the 996 (Getrag) box when it was first offered on the Ultima.

The G50 has the advantage of lots of people making aftermarket parts and ratios for it, as well as being designed to run inverted.

I believe there are people out there who rebuild 997 boxes as they were designed to be easier to work on than a 996 box.

I am not sure about gearing, but the current 997 turbo is good for around 200 and it's not a high revving engine.

I am working on finding out more.

The 997 Carrera gearbox tops out at about 177 at 7100rpm in 6th so not ideal. Turbo boxes are rare too.

There are a lot of components that require changing from a G50 to get the 997 to fit.

Finding a turbo box and fitting it when building from new would be a very good way to go but I have to draw the line somewhere with my rebuild.

A G50-52 is a good box for the Ultima so all I have to do is get the linkage right.

If I may ask a newbie question...
So the G50 (6 speed) is from what era or sub-model of Porsche? Is it from 993's?
Thanks in advance...

I have the 6 speed G50/20 which I am told was from a 993.

I think the 6 speed G50 was only introduced with the 993 range. I had a 5 speed in my 964RS and 6 speed in the 986CS

My G50-52 is from a 2wd turbo 964, I think, and is a 5 speed, not 6.

Choose a box carefully as the wrong one will give you a very low 1st gear and noisy(er) motorway cruising along with a maximum top speed of about 175mph (important if you plan to do Fighting Torque).

If you search this forum you will find a gearbox calculator as designed by Dom.

I've been researching 'boxes for 6mths now and have just bought a G96 (2002 model 996) twin turbo box for my build (and there's another one for sale on PH that I nearly went for too).

I wanted both cable change and a good 6th gear for sensible cruising, so the G96/G97 'box fitted the bill perfectly.

Regarding ratios, I've got a nice calculator and the California Motorsports website help gives the base data ;-) If it helps folks... based on a 6,500rpm shift point, a G50/02 looks like this:

1st = 46mph
2nd = 77mph
3rd = 109mph
4th = 140mph
5th = 169mph

For the same shift point, a G96 TT box gives:
1st = 38mph
2nd = 71mph
3rd = 103mph
4th = 130mph
5th = 158mph
6th = 194mph

Hope that helps, Mark.

I have the 996 TT box from California Motorsport and the following are the specs:

Reconditioned with all new main thrust bearings (4), synchronizers (6), gaskets, seals and hardware
-New 1st/2nd shift sleeve assembly
-New 3rd/4th shift sleeve assembly
-New 3rd-6th gear synchros were upgraded to steel ones
-New Custom 3.15 tall 1st gear
-New Custom 2.00 tall 2nd gear
-New Kaaz 1.5 way locking LSD set to 45/90%

The CFM gear ratio calculator shows max mph at 7000rpm as being:

1st - 49.9
2nd - 78.6
3rd - 111.7
4th - 140.7
5th - 171.1
and for cruising...

6th - 209.7

Keith, sounds like a nice, strong (pricey wink ) box. Looking at your numbers, that's stock final drive you're running then, too.

Mind you, highly unlikely my shed will reach 7000rpm in 6th....but it will be fun trying!

how many places can you hit 200mph over there in the UK,
i would be happy with hitting 190mph (306km/h) as there are not many places that you can do that in oz?

Never did work out what the speed limit was on the roads whilst i was there so dont know what your cruze speed is. seemed like it was about 70 MPH would that be right?

Speed limit is 70mph but most traffic travels at 80 on motorways so cruising can be a little noisy at about 3200rpm - with the G50-52 it will be 2720rpm, which is way more relaxed.
