Looking for a gearbox, budget is quite tight now, so am looking for a box that will be ok with an LS7, road and track use, but importantly can be relatively easily altered at a later date, next year, when or if funds allow.

The 2 that stick out as being a good compromise are a G50-03 and G50-00. Does anyone have experiences with either, or reasons not to go for one of these as a base?

Cheers

There's a G96\50 twin turbo box for sale in the classifieds at the moment. Having spent a lot of time looking at ratios, I've found that these TT units appear to have gearing well suited to torquey motors. According to a mate at Porsche, they're very strong and easily rebuildable too, should the need arise in the future. I've just bought myself one wink

The turbo box in the classifieds will require converting to 2WD will it not? I know it can be done but this will be on top of the purchase cost.

Any G50 will be suitable, the two mentioned in the OP are probably the most common and the most used due to their availability and the fact that the 5 speeds are cheaper. Both are good choices and will serve the LS engine well. I now have a GT box (had a G50-02 originally without issue)but a friend of mine has a G50-00 and has run his on a LS7 for 2 years now with no problem.

Gear changes slow the car's acceleration so a 5 speed is not a disadvantage versus a 6 speed as you will have plenty of grunt to keep you accelerating.

You can live with a box with a max of 175 for a year or two, but you will be frustrated by a first gear that is too low to be any use and noisy motorway cruising.

A new/refreshed box and cam change in 24months time may help retain interest (and the need to tinker) in the car though.

Don't do a rebuild though - it takes too long.

Yes the TT box in the classifieds will require converting back to 2WD, but that's an easy £250 job and once done, you have a GT2/3 box (most internals are common) for a fraction of the price wink The ratios on the G96/50 aren't far off the stock 5-speed G50s, but you get a nice 6th gear for cruising. It's horses for courses really.

Thanks for the replies.
I'm assuming the box in the classifieds requires centre, not side shift?

Correct, it will be cable shift, so the cockpit mechanism (factory sourced) should be factored in.

Cheers. Have gone side shift so it sounds like an 00 or 03 is a good starting point.

Cheers Again.

Speak to Autobionics - highly recommended and very helpful - importantly they also listen to your requirements!

i have G50/52 in mine which is side gear change.. the difference between mine and the usual G50/03 box is mine is fitted with a higher 5th gear as standard and i think it has a different lsd, not sure if it beafer too as someone will correct me here..

However its the same box as fitted in the record car so if one comes up at the right price it is a good option over the 00/03 box.. My old formular for gear ratios will help you between all the boxes and at the moment I cant find it but sure some one posted it on their website for us all to use..
