Brilliant!!! That's a noise to be proud of, I hope your neighbours are hard of hearing (they will be soon!).

That's how an Ultima should sound.

Shame about the nanny state's rules.

Nobody else has said it so I will....why would you want a system with no silencing?

Nice, I want to do the same thing with mine, just a straight pipe for those days I just don't care about noise limits smile

I think that most people wants the best horsepower within the budget and package you got.
Most at times you losse quite some horsepower from such exhaust systems without sufficient back presure.

You should compair it on a dyno than you will see its quite easy to loose hp and hard to make gains its a combination of your engine design
the intake trackt diameter, valve size , number of valves, the exhaust side same also the type of camshaft , lift and overlap not to forget timing and cyl head flow figures and compression ratio also bore and stroke

all the above contribute to be able to calculate the best exhaust sustem with the least losses of HP
and you will always be surprised that in some cases adding backpressure can increase the engine performance

My main priority is get the most horsepower that can be extracted from the engine that it is still reliable
the sound might be less than an all the way open system but you have the performance and thats why I like these cars

thanks for the comments, finally the car sounds as it looks, and for the thunder in the back no problem if it costs me
50 hp. This x-pipe is loveley in idle it has a deep grunty sound and the higher the revs the higher the pitch, could not be any better !
I agree for cruising and driving larger distances this is not working, but honestly I never do that with that car maybe once or twice a year, but all these short
drives in the close by mountains now have the right ROAR !
One stupid question:

Most of the LeMans racers and even F1 cars more or less have a straight out exhaust even almost no tube after the header, so I wonder why they do not generate back pressure in these cars ?

Hi Spatz thats a logical question when I first started working with engines My idea was bigger and more is better but sometimes less is better.

Why F1 does not have all that backpresure an F1 engine in principle is completly different from what we use on the road.

1st an F1 engine has an very high compresion ratio in the neighberhood of 14 :1
2nd an F1 engine the gab of the piston in the cilinder is minimal zo little that before you can think about starting an F1 engine the water temp must be close to 100 deg which makes the block expand a bit and than only the engine can be started.
3rd the rpm an F1 engine runs is far different from a road engine the idle of an F1 engine is above the redline of most road engines

You can run a test and will surely see that you need some back presure to get some power especially in the lower rev range

Dear Steve,

yes that makes sense however driving the car now a few times with the new exhaust is not revealing any lack of power.....in fact with this noise now it far more fun to drive it. Not sure if the x-pipe is helping but at higher reves I am thinking it has more power more constant development of torque, could be that I lost some in the lower revs, but there was too much anyway......still can make the tires spin easily !
In my opinion this is the sound that fits the look of the car much better. Actually when I am in fith gear at cruising around 70-80 mph I can still enjoy my hifi, so not too bad.

Hi Spatz,
a little while ago, i sent you an email via pistonheads with some questions regarding your new built.
Maybe there is a problem with the mailing service of pistonheads?
