Hi guys

After nearly a year the Ultima is back up and running. Its been a long process rebuilding the engine delayed by money, changes in build and delays having parts specially made.

The engine builder a Mr Charles Dunn has made an absolute delight of an engine which we are now looking at pushing out 600-620 HP. His attention to detail and commitment were second to none and he delivered the engine and came up to Macclesfield 3 times to run to set the car up. If anyone needs a recommended engine builder I will pass the number on.

In a car that weighs under a ton its going to be fun driving the only problem i now have is I have to run it in for nearly a 1000 miles... redface(

So if you see me about give me a wave, but dont try to race just yet!!!

Thankyou again

Dom

Hi Dom, I just got mine back on the road last week after my engine rebuild. I missed nearly 3 months of use because of a lifter failure.

Interesting that you are doing the 1000 miles softly softly running in approach. I do mine in a 100 (one hundred) miles now, and last time. It seems to work a treat and vastly reduced my oil consumption from when I did the 1000 mile method on my AS engine. I know this is a whole can of worms, it would be interesting to hear others views on the matter.

Very subjective, it really depends on what oil you are using.

...if its a solid roller motor you are only running in the rings... takes about 30-40 mins if all built well. (less if very well built)

One of the worst enemies of a newly built engine is bore-wash on initial start up. It is vitally important that the fuelling is not too rich in the first few minutes of the engine's life, as this will compromise the bedding in of the rings, and hence lead to excessive oil consumption.

Yep, running hydraulic roller now, so just ring bedding! I was going down a hyd-flat tappet route (before Comp Cams stepped in with a good offer) but breaking in a flat tappet cam seems a bit of a nightmare wink

1000 miles...is that what Charles has requested?

Goes against the thinking of any SBC experts i've read of.
The 'break in' method seems far more popular. No steady state running, plenty of spirited power application but nothing excessive. The bursts of power, pulling hard up a hill say, help bed the rings otherwise the bore can glaze and then nothing (bar a rebuild) will get rid of it.

hi
the engine was quite tight so taken it steady to start with. long gentle acceleration and long roll off..

Its not a gentle gentle bed in, but more of I can now rev it but not excessive and not full throttle.

Its my very high lift roller cam in the original block, new solid lifters, cranks been reballanced, new spec pistons, rings, New big heads, valves, balancer etc etc. It was high spec dry sump engine before the rebuild, but used to burn oil, now nothing not a drop. , but most things are new, so im running it in exactly as Gail and Charles have instructed.. I want reliabilty and horsepower as I cant afford this again.. And it was alot cheaper than the LS route which I initially looked at .

I'm running a cheap oil for 500 miles of which ive already done 250 miles, long runs, no steady revs no labouring the motor. lots of acceleration.. I will run the valvolive race oil from then on.

Im dropping the oil at 500 miles, adjusting the valves and then will give him a ring. The motor feels very strong and strangly sounds completely different.. very smooth note always flat crank?

im off to Ninemeister tomorrow to check all the geometry Ive played arround with as my car is full rose joint and ive made alot of adjustments to the front end. Finally cured the N/S/F just kissing the arch, and turn in feels alot better.
