While surfing the web I found a product that I just had to order for our next build. I was looking for an alternative to the keys that fit each Ultima out there (try explaining that to the insurance company) and found this:

www.auto-innovatio.com/magento/english/smart-syste...

You basically just keep the keycard in your pocket and the system recognises the key and enables the starter button.
Has anyone used something similar and can report? I found no comparable alternative yet.

Looks interesting, but I wonder how far goes the security with the keyfob.
As it looks it only protects the start button. Any clever thief can rip the button out and connect the wires manually, or does it have a black box which connects to the engine management etc.

edited: Didn't look down the page completely, so I opened my mouth toooo fast rotate.

Best protection I found so far is taking out the ECU all together (caterham in my case at the moment)

I like the idea but most Ultima (at least in the UK) will also have an imobiliser which will also require a fob as a minimum before you can start.

Good point Steve but in that case I think there`s the possibility of using just the start button together with the other fob which is even cheaper:

My wifes car is an infiniti F35 which has keyless start. Twice in 85.000 miles it has failed to start because it LOST the code. The dealer fixs this in about 10 minutes charges way to much money and we go on our way. This is not the fob the problem is in the on board reciever my point to this is if I had one of these systems in an Ultima I would wire in a alternate way to start the car, maybe a push button up in the nose or in the engine compartment hidden. My thinking on this is if Infiniti with all its resources can't get this right..........Lee

There is an alternative way to start the car (at least in the system provided). You get a keypad which can be controlled from outside the car through the windshield glass or you could it position anywhere inside with a code that can be used if the fob should fail to work. Looks good to me so far...

Keep it simple keep it neat!

I have gone for a very robust keypad unit + alarm system.
That way if the rfid or wireless stuff goes wrong, I can still open the door and still use the keypad to start. ..and it can't forget the code either!

OK - if the alarm goes potty I still have a problem...but hey! Nothing like being in a car park full of people trying to shut-up your screaming car! whistle

Looks like a very nice system. I think if it was Thatcham approved, I'd have looked more closely at it... however, given many UK insurance companies will insist on a Cat1 approved system for a £50K+ value car, it's not worth the risk.

Just out of interest, I couldn't tell from the web site if the system retained a normal Accessory On position without starting the engine. Dunno if that would cause an issue with IVA or not, for those of us still building.

That was my first question too as you don`t always want to start the engine immediately (maybe listen to some calm music before driving...)
With the system you actually have 2 "positions" prior to starting the engine (just like in production cars), i.e. key position 1 and 2 where position 1 just turns on the accessories and position 2 turns on the ignition (ECU etc). You can turn on either of these with a short push of the button and for starting the engine it needs to be pushed a little longer (which can obviously be coupled with a clutch or brake pedal switch to prevent the car from starting with a gear engaged).
Here`s a video describing the functions: www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&...
You could even start the engine with the fob (don`t ask me why you wanted to do that though).

A mate of mine had one of these fitted to his car

http://www.viper.com/

it allows remote start from the Key fob.
He would leve the car with the gear selector in neutral and the handbrake on. in winter heater set to flat out, in summer air con on. He would sit at his desk and start the car 5 minuets before he was ready to leave so that by the time he got out the door the engine was up to temp and the inside was either cool or warm as desired.
