How exactly does someone scam you to sell your car? If they've paid you the money before they take the car?

I don't release cars until I have cash in my hand or a transfer in my bank account. I don't accept bank/personal cheques.

Thanks for mailing back,i am an Oceanographer and i am buying this for
Dad, i am at sea right now, I can only pay through PayPal at the
moment as i don't have access to my bank account online, but i have it
attached to my PayPal account, and this is why i insisted on using
PayPal to pay,all i will need is your PayPal email address to make the
payments, and if you don't have a paypal account yet,its pretty easy to
set one up at www.paypal.com,i will be expecting your email.I have a
pick up agent that will come for the pick up after payments.I will
like to have communicate and discuss this via Phone but i am 95% Deaf
and i do use hearing piece so that was why i have prefer to
communicate more through Mail ...So kindly get back to asap...i need
to see more photos also and i will like to know the last asking price.

Oh Jeez! How funny!

On a serious note, I would send this email to Paypal as a complaint recorded delivery - ie Obvious Criminals are easily using their services to scam customers, and threaten them with putting it in the press! Maybe if everyone did this Chase Bank may actually do something about the problem!

Yes, that's a very obvious scam - I had one almost exactly the same when I sold my Atom earlier this yr. It's another way of scammers trying to hack your PayPal account. It's so obviously dodgy, I'm surprised these morons still try such tactics.

As said above, it's not too hard to be "safe" while selling a car.... don't give out home address, meet somewhere neutral in the daylight, take a friend, check identities on arrival, don't allow anyone to test drive without fully comp insurance for YOUR car, don't release the car until you have cleared funds, blah, blah.

Good luck with the sale smile

Who are these people. I'd waste as much of his time as possible and then say goodbye.

Probably somewhere in West Africa. We get plenty of scam deals from Nigeria, Ghana, etc. They always seem to be the Prince or Princess of xyz or Minister of zyx

May be more to do with...

- He pays via paypal...and confimation come to your email account.
- Then very quickly you get a call saying that someone is on their way to view-collect the car
- Someone arrives...says fine and takes the car.
- You then find out that the payment has been reversed.
- Payer says he did not receive goods
- You say your agent took it
- he says, was not HIS agent - deals off!

- You are bksed with nowhere to go!

This is happening all the time on eBay for big and small items!

Never, never have someone pick up ANYTHING if paying via Paypal. CASH ONLY - Paypal will say 'no proof of delivery', even if you have a receipt signed! Has to be a courier or delivery company, recorde delivery - even then they can wriggle out.

Hello there,

Thanks for getting back to me at your earliest.i want you to assure me
i will not be disappointed? As I'm buying it as gift for my family to
our new home which we are planing on moving into and no body knows
about the purchase as i want it to be a full surprise. Do you think
its worth a surprise gift? also no shipping involved as i have a
pickup agent that will come for it once you confirm payment has
cleared. Payment will be made via paypal only(if you don't have an
account, paypal is very easy, safe and secure, log on to
www.paypal.com) since I'm requesting this transaction to be done via
paypal, i will cover all the paypal charges. I'm sorry i will not be
able to come look at it in person as I'm present unavailable due to my
work conditions and paypal is my only payment option as its the only
payment form i can access here. I hope we can make the purchase as
fast as possible?please answer this question

Are you the first owner of it?
Why are you selling it?
When have you been using it?
Where are you located?

Hope to read back from you soon.....

Thanks.

For those that use Paypal, be aware there are instances of them reversing payments direct from your bank account on record and even freezing bank accounts.

Most people I know are now using a separate bank account specifically for Paypal and nothing else. Once funds are transferred across to the Paypal linked account immediately (and before releasing goods) move them to you regular bank account.
