At the risk of finding that everyone is using a different oil, can those with LS7 engines tell me the make and viscosity of their engine oil please.

Also, did you use a running-in oil and if so what was it?

That is a rather resounding vote for Mobil 1.

The only time I have used it in the past (many years ago) it bu**red the hydraulic tappets on a Honda V6 engine.

I was hopeing to be able to buy the oil in 25 litre drums as I suspect I will be using quite a bit. Can you get wholesale Mobil 1?

Not had much luck with big drum yet but Costco do Mobil 1 0w40 at £24.99 / 5 litres + VAT which seems like a good price.

Paul - What makes you think you will be using the oil in large quant's? All I have read on the LS engines is that they don't use oil anywhere near the same as SBC's. In fact no more than any current production engine.

I don't expect the engine to use or loose oil but as I intend to do quite a few track days I intend to change it quite frequently. I have just ordered my first 4 filters already.

I personally will never use mobile 1 in any engine, and will always look for an alternative.

This was due to testing i did on oils 7 different oils about 15 years ago. I know oils have improved and moved on but will always remember the effect the oil had on the pistons and shells compared to other oils of the same viscosity. The test was under the same conditions on a standard engine on the dyno. The mobil 1 produced more horsepower but at the sacrifise of wear on the components. It also did not stick to components very well when left for a while so if the engine was left over night , the initial start up produced alot of wear. i will say again this was 15 years ago, but it has always put me off knowing these independant results. The results were never made public either, they were for our own records when tuning engines.

Please remember engines and manufacturers who supply oil in their new products do so because of the deal they have recieved. Its not because it is the best oil available for their product. Alot of manufacturers of cars use oil companies who sponsor them within racing. Shell ferrari, Peugeot Total oil etc etc.

So do your own searching for the best oil, not just what comes with the engine when new.

Interesting comments Dom.

If you see above what I experienced with a 24 Valve Honda engine (admittedly about 18 years ago) this would be the first time I have used it since. I have not purchased yet.

I use (and have done for 12 years) a small UK oil manufacturer for all my farm equipment and would be quite keen to do something similar for the Ultima and Cerbera (which could probably both use the same oil).

Any thoughts/recommendations on smaller UK based fully synthetic 0w 40 manufacturers?

hi Paul

I had read your earlier comments and yes maybe it was the same oils??

Do the engines recomend any other viscosity oils for the LS engines as a 0-40 is quiet a thin oil when cold and its when cold most of the wear happens...

i would be checking a couple of things.

Is that viscosity for UK?
is that for uk all seasons?
what do they recomend for summer use only?
A 5-40 could make a difference.

Are you asking about Millers oils from Shropshire? Ive heard good things but have not used them.

Ive alsways stuck to American oils for American engines and Valvoline has alweays been top of my list as well as Kendal who used to sponsor me.(I sourced them as it was the best oil at the time due to our tests).

by the way, havent seen any photos of your restored car yet... Can we have a peek??

Dom

I have not used Miller Oils yet though I have just filled the G50 with their gear oil so we will see.

I understand the desire to use oils from the home of the engine. If they can't get it right what hope have those this side of the pond.

I will do a little more research.

.... and they do change their brew these oil Gurus..

Similarly a well known two stroke brand ruled the roost for many years until every user noticed their machines performance had lost its edge. (many two stroke oils contain ignition enhancers)..Customer complaints mounted but the oil company maintained nothing had changed !!.... until one bright spark paid to have the old and current versions analyzed.. Some very red faces down at the oil Co apparently !

No it was a more recent product Dom, semi-synth blend that does contain some Castor too.. just for smell of course !

But as for manufacturer support with oil's.. its the same in many area's of automotive production, paint being another example.... x hundred thousand free litres = manufacturer approval !!

...very likely the same with oils...
